The Vampire Diaries Review: Hunt. Prey. Kill.

at . Comments

Elena: He described you as a monster.
Stefan: That's what I was.

Typically, The Vampire Diaries saves its biggest cliffhanger for last. On "The Dinner Party," however, there were twists and turns around every commercial corner, from a shocking death, to an afterlife lesson from an unexpected source, to a witch-on-witch attack, to a naked bathroom surprise.

Let's tackle the exciting episode, intriguing quote by intriguing quote...

His Dark Past

"I just want you to fight for it." So said Stefan to Elena, following a detailed account of his dark past and how Lexie swooped in, saved the day and played amateur vampire psychologist to both Salvatore brothers.

I must admit: I'm a sucker for all flashbacks. These were especially enlightening, following in the revealing footsteps of my favorite all-time episode, "Blood Brothers," taking viewers further and further into the complicated history of Stefan and Damon. Just great stuff all around, especially the way Stefan relayed the advice given to him and applied it to Elena's desired martyrdom.

"I'm going to help you." Said by Katherine to Damon. Correction: a nude, dripping wet Katherine to Damon. Thank you, Vampire Diaries! It's about time some of us guys got a bit of eye candy!

Katherine is clearly an intriguing character, played impressively by Nina Dobrev. But it's almost impossible to keep track of her plots, schemes and allegiances at this point.

I'll save any final judgment and analysis until the season is complete and we see where all this went. But if she's serious about wanting to help the good guys here, why did she come back in such a mysterious manner? Why not return and be honest and offer to help? Then again, she may not be serious about this claim and... well... see what I mean? I'm happy to just go with it for now, but the show does need to be careful with throwing out surprises just for the sake of surprises.

When this storyline is over, let's hope we can retrace Katherine's steps and her motives will remain the same.

"Leave the dagger in." A lesson well learned by Damon regarding how one kills an Original. I'm not too ashamed to say I yelped out loud at Elijah's death. I did not see that coming.

Well, his first death. When I thought he was actually dead. You've gotta love how The Vampire Diaries is so enjoyably chaotic that it kills off the same character twice in a matter of minutes. If this is the last we see of Elijah (and is anyone willing to take that bet? I predict they revive him when Klaus arrives), kudos to Daniel Gillies (friend of the site!). He did a great job portraying Elijah as a calm, collected, frightening menace.

"He took my powers." Poor Bonnie. Readers asked why I didn't comment much on her kiss with Jeremy a week ago, but there simply wasn't much to say. It was easy to see this relationship coming and then it happened. Good for them. Not much to report. That isn't the case anymore.  What is a witch without her powers? What lengths will Jeremy go to in order to help? It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

"Ouch!" Pretty much what Elena screamed out when she stabbed herself in the gut with that dagger. Talk about another shocker. Never call the Doppleganger's bluff. Duly noted.

What did everyone else think of the episode? Will you miss Elijah if he's gone? And did Alaric make a mistake by killing him? Klaus is still coming, after all...

Question: How many daggers are there? I think the one used to kill Elijah BOTH times was the one John Gilbert brought to Mystic Falls a few weeks ago, since we saw Damon at the cabin after Elena "killed" Elijah so it's safe to assume that was the same dagger Alaric used in the Salvatore's house.
BUT if that is the case then that one dagger must then kill EVERY Original? hmmm considering you can't take it out or the Original will come back to life it seems impossible for there to be just 1 little dagger in the world.
What about the arsenal Elena found in the Gilbert cabin? I think that it may be safe to assume that there are a few oak daggers lying around in there somewhere. no?
Also considering how powerful and Original is shouldn't killing one require a little more than just leaving a dagger in the body? I would think some sort of dismemberment would be appropriate. I mean anyone can just take a dagger out, you know, a witch with an ulterior motive, another original, a vampire with a vendetta, a wolf looking for revenge... anyone!

Lana: the ring that John gave to Jeremy was his brother's ring, he was wearing it because Isobel gave his ring to Alaric. So that detail isn't wrong.

I Loved this episode!! But i really didn' expect elijah to be killed! i'm not too happy about it 'cause i liked his character a lot. but i'm pretty sure we'll see him again! Since there's only one dagger to kill an original only one original can be dead. So what are they gonna do when Klaus shows up??
and this whole episode also didn't touch the topic of the werewolves! i don't like the werewolf thing at all! so i didn't miss tyler.
though i kinda missed caroline.. :(

@Larissa: I really don't think this is the end of Elijah!

Oh and one more thing, I am truly going to miss Elijah! I actually really liked him. It was like evil forces side with good forces to take down an even eviler force. Sort of what it was like when Damon joined forces with Stefan.

Okay I don't think I've ever seen a more jaw dropping, action packed episode of the vampire diaries yet! The first half-hour of the episode moved slowly, but still interesting with Stefan's story unraveling.
Then came the dinner party and the fullest, most unexpected ten minutes of a show I have ever seen. First finding out that Damon couldn't kill Elijah without killing himself, then Alaric killing Elijah but taking out the dagger meaning Elijah was still alive, and finally the actual killing of Elijah and how It lead to the escape of Katherine, who is supposedly staying to help the team.
I have to say I knew this wasn't Elena's time to become a vampire but I have to say I wasn't expecting her to stab herself and survive.
On a side note, the Bonnie and Jeremy story line was cute, and I feel bad that, the witch came and stole her powers. I have a feeling though, that they're going to have to join forces with Stefan, Elena etc. now that Elijah is dead.
Overall this episode was defiantly one of my favorites except for the fact that there was no Caroline and Tyler is gone.

I liked the episode it was well paced and exciting. Though my tv was giving problems with the picture quality :( I miss Elijah, I loved him! However this is not the end of my bad ass vampire. I refuse to accept that this is the end for him. I think they should have waited until Klaus came before murdering Elijah because I think Elijah is their best bet to killing him.

Is anyone else annoyed everytime John tells Alaric he wants his ring back? You gave your ring to Jeremy you moron. Alaric's ring was given to him by Isobel. It just gets on my nerves everytime he says it.

last nights ep. was fucking awesome. so many twist and turns. this shows is thee best out right now. breaking dawn what? i dont even kno where to begin. i knew elijah wasnt gonna die, he's an original i wish damon understood that and jus go with it. someone needs to kill uncle john soon please. now we found out y elijah wants to kill klaus, he has jonas's sister or daughter or whatever. i hope that elijah comes back. and katherine that lil u kno what.. and on that note poor bonnie

Reading the comments after post mine, I saw I forgot few things^^
As a lot of people I was shocked at Elijah's first death and then they (the writers) succeed to chock/amazed me once again with his second! How truly amazing those writers are? Brilliant! I mean i could have seems weird that Elijah got suprised twice but Elena/Damon/Stefan's plan to get him again was very well though! Poor Elijah! Don't worry, you're still my favorite bad-ass vampire
