Gossip Girl Review: "Panic Roommate"

at . Comments

"Panic Roommate" was a decent episode of Gossip Girl.

It was an improvement over the past couple of weeks, but certain things still aren't clicking for me lately. I kept feeling like I should be more invested in ... well, almost everything.

Serena and Ben kissing just didn't feel like an OMG moment. Chuck and Raina have so little chemistry, it's hard to believe there's anything there. The Damien-Eric storyline had a lot of potential, and while it certainly wasn't bad, I expected more drama.

Ben and Serena Photo

Serena is falling head over heels for yet another character.

Plot lines that make sense are not a requirement for Gossip Girl success. Compelling people and story arcs are, though, and that's what's lacking at this stage of the game.

The whole takeover of Bass Industries needs to get some legs. Chuck is a fan favorite, yet it's hard to identify with him in his quest to save the company, at least at this point.

Ben should be growing on me more too, his role in Juliet's scheme and in Serena's past having been fleshed out the way he was over the course of this entire season, but no.

This guy is emotionless and beyond dull, and his connection to Serena too nebulous to see any sort of spark there. Maybe he'll come out of his shell soon, but he's a bore so far.

Perhaps the best parts of the episode where the music - not just Florence & The Machine's performance of "Cosmic Love," but also The Naked and Famous' "Young Blood" - and the previews for next week, which we've posted for you below.

Let's start from the beginning. For whatever reason, Blair decided that the best way to get Epperley off her back was to get her on her own back, so to speak. A good plan.

With Chuck unavailable, she turned to Nate. Hey, he's got nothing else to do.

Amazingly, Nate didn't close the deal, but Epperley ended up running off with a guy she was in love with anyway ... leaving Blair already in charge of her position at W?

Eh, we'll buy it. Epperley peacing out of the show so abruptly was bizarre, but it's Blair, and anything that gets her up that career ladder (and more screen time) works.

A Chair Chat

Is there a Chair reunion in our future?

Having moved into the Humphrey loft for reasons far from clear, Ben's presence inspired Dan to team up with Eric, who was being manipulated by Damien, to get him out.

Their plan, which could have been 10 times stealthier and more effective if Chair had been involved, was to get Ben to lose his temper, attack Damien and violate parole.

Fail. Ben kept his rage in check. Plan B was for Eric to punch Damien and accuse Ben, who didn't try to defend himself against that false accusation and was hauled off.

Of course, Dan being Dan, he did feel bad and come clean. As did Eric. Now Damien may really be on the outs because he's getting cut off by his dad. Again, low stakes.

Think that will actually happen? Will Damien will be back for revenge? This is a character we can see big things happening from, so this might be just the beginning.

This episode was pleasant enough and some of the Gossip Girl quotes were good, but we need some more drama, and reasons to care, to make this season truly great.

Perhaps Gossip Girl is just a victim of its own success and I expect too much. But I think that our favorite show, much as I always enjoy it, is capable of slightly better.

Next week may up the ante, fortunately. Check out the hand-touching in this promo:

No, No, No, No, No.
For some reason I had very high hopes for this episode, because I saw on the promo that Blair and Chuck will team up, but I was so wrong!
I like the fact that it at least developed further into the storylines, rather than being very faint and not really going in any directions.
So Serena and Ben…first off I think I am wrong about him for that he really is who he is and that he does not have any other motives because he did not say he did not punch Damien for fear that it would push Serena and Eric further apart. Serena really seems into this guy and I am happy for her, because at least she is grounded for now. But ouch, what she said to Dan was harsh. I am never a fan of Dan but even I thought her saying something about them not dating so he has no say in her life was mean.
Omg, I feel so bad for Nate. Is this really all he is good for now? Being pimp out? Being more of a whore than ever? Somebody give this guy an actual storyline, please.
I did enjoy him with Blair though. It’s been awhile for them.
So I am very happy for Blair. She is getting what she wants…I think. And seriously, do these people not have school??
Chuck and Raina??? No, No, No, No, No, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn’t want him to develop actual feelings for her. They need to stop making out. Chuck needs to get back Bass Industry and forget about her. I swear, if he says “eight words, three syllables to her, I will hate him forever. Blair is the only one he has said it too, and it should stay that way. Speaking of Blair, I like how they had more screen time together in this episode. I swear you can tell they are in love simply by the way they look at each other.
I’m not happy with the episode because it did not end the way I wanted it too, but at this point I shouldn’t be surprise anymore. BTW: I saw the promo, and I am literally freaking out. Why does Chuck seem to cherish Raina or Eva more than when he was with Blair? Come, he decorated a hotel suite or something for her and from what I saw, it looks beautiful. This makes me sick to my stomach. Chuck is being sweet when he is not supposed to. And Dan, keep your hands off Blair!!!! I guess there’s no denying that they will get together.

you are absolutely right.... there is no way chuck would do all that for Raina and I think Blair is misunderstood because at the end of the episode I think she still thinks that Chuck needs Raina for the company and that was why she was like u owe me... and then she thinks Chuck actually likes Raina but it's all just an act and then she gets with Dan just to make chuck jealous... my prediction

I think, that Chuck only pretends to fall for Raina (in promo she said to him nothing is sacred to you), so my guess is: Blair belives Chuck loves Raina and kisses Dan, but in the end it is revealed that Chuck did everything just to get his company back, and than dumps Raina.

Okay seriously, I am having Chair withdraws. I need my Chuck and Blair moments. Having a scene this week was amazing and all but I need CHUCK AND BLAIR. And Ben needs to go away. Where the hell is Vanessa by the way? And Jenny can stay in Hudson for all I care. Poor Eric, I find myself saying that a lot. Serena can't get any dumber. Juliet needs to come back and mess things up so it'll be slightly more interesting. I LOVE DAMIEN. He reminds me of old Chuck. He's funny AND he looks like Zac Efron. I hate Raina. She can be discarded with the rest of Chuck's ex-whores (Eva, Amelia, Jenny, Georgina...)

I will even accept Jenny over Ben and Serena.

The only good thing about this episode was Blair. Serena and Ben is weird to me because they do not look great together. I do not believe Ben when he said Juliet only called because it was his mother birthday. Do Nate even know that it was Ben who beat up his father in prison. Please take away Ben and Serena if it means bringing back Juliet.

I find the entire Chuck- Raina thing very childishly handled. Is this the same Chuck who schemed through anything in season 1 and 2 and was willing to sacrifice Blair for the empire in season 3 to sav his legacy and now his only plan of saving bass industries is sleeping with raina? I am so disappointed. To top it Chuck and Raina have zero chemistry - and why does Chuck fall in love with every girl that falls in his SL?- He is supposed to be the playboy not the i-fall-for-every-girl-who-smiles-at-me guy? The dan-eric-damien thing could have been better handled and why am not more excited abt Serena kissing her seven thousandth love interest:P- The only good thing abt this episode was Blair though her SL was weird. I cant believe am saying this, being a chair shipper,- I missed Dair!

@the kate: I love your lttle Chuck analysis and I so agree... I thot the entire reason Chair was special was because Chuck never really loved any girl other than Blair - the one girl who invoked feelings in him-Now it turns out he has feelings for ever girl he has sex with.

I kinda liked Chuck and Raina in this episode, cuz Raina see's a side of Chuck that nobody really knows, she has a lot in common with Chuck. I was sure in the end scene with her father that she would tell him to crush Chuck after he gains control of Bass Industries, instead she asked her father to help chuck!
Moving on to Dair, i missed it terribly!
Blair's storyline was cute and entertaining, but Nate really has no purpose in the show anymore! they should bring back Juliet as asap!!
Dan was busy trying to shoo Ben away, and teamed up with Eric and Damien...which, i agree, had lot more potential in the storyline, instead they went with the "I did It! (young Little J)" Story.
Serena and Ben had A LOT of chemistry in the LAST episode. Their Moment came and went with that episode. This one, however, did not get me rooting for them whatsoever!
Looking forward to next week's episode and hope thet don't screw up the Chuck/Raina Dan/Blair storylines, otherwise i have no other reason to keep watching!! (unless they bring back Juliet, Georgina and Jack Bass!!)

i love blake lively but serena is getting a little too stupid to handle
