Gossip Girl Review: "Panic Roommate"

at . Comments

"Panic Roommate" was a decent episode of Gossip Girl.

It was an improvement over the past couple of weeks, but certain things still aren't clicking for me lately. I kept feeling like I should be more invested in ... well, almost everything.

Serena and Ben kissing just didn't feel like an OMG moment. Chuck and Raina have so little chemistry, it's hard to believe there's anything there. The Damien-Eric storyline had a lot of potential, and while it certainly wasn't bad, I expected more drama.

Ben and Serena Photo

Serena is falling head over heels for yet another character.

Plot lines that make sense are not a requirement for Gossip Girl success. Compelling people and story arcs are, though, and that's what's lacking at this stage of the game.

The whole takeover of Bass Industries needs to get some legs. Chuck is a fan favorite, yet it's hard to identify with him in his quest to save the company, at least at this point.

Ben should be growing on me more too, his role in Juliet's scheme and in Serena's past having been fleshed out the way he was over the course of this entire season, but no.

This guy is emotionless and beyond dull, and his connection to Serena too nebulous to see any sort of spark there. Maybe he'll come out of his shell soon, but he's a bore so far.

Perhaps the best parts of the episode where the music - not just Florence & The Machine's performance of "Cosmic Love," but also The Naked and Famous' "Young Blood" - and the previews for next week, which we've posted for you below.

Let's start from the beginning. For whatever reason, Blair decided that the best way to get Epperley off her back was to get her on her own back, so to speak. A good plan.

With Chuck unavailable, she turned to Nate. Hey, he's got nothing else to do.

Amazingly, Nate didn't close the deal, but Epperley ended up running off with a guy she was in love with anyway ... leaving Blair already in charge of her position at W?

Eh, we'll buy it. Epperley peacing out of the show so abruptly was bizarre, but it's Blair, and anything that gets her up that career ladder (and more screen time) works.

A Chair Chat

Is there a Chair reunion in our future?

Having moved into the Humphrey loft for reasons far from clear, Ben's presence inspired Dan to team up with Eric, who was being manipulated by Damien, to get him out.

Their plan, which could have been 10 times stealthier and more effective if Chair had been involved, was to get Ben to lose his temper, attack Damien and violate parole.

Fail. Ben kept his rage in check. Plan B was for Eric to punch Damien and accuse Ben, who didn't try to defend himself against that false accusation and was hauled off.

Of course, Dan being Dan, he did feel bad and come clean. As did Eric. Now Damien may really be on the outs because he's getting cut off by his dad. Again, low stakes.

Think that will actually happen? Will Damien will be back for revenge? This is a character we can see big things happening from, so this might be just the beginning.

This episode was pleasant enough and some of the Gossip Girl quotes were good, but we need some more drama, and reasons to care, to make this season truly great.

Perhaps Gossip Girl is just a victim of its own success and I expect too much. But I think that our favorite show, much as I always enjoy it, is capable of slightly better.

Next week may up the ante, fortunately. Check out the hand-touching in this promo:

Hmmm I’m not sure what to make of this episode. Can’t make out if Ben is really in love with Serena or if he’s planning something. Didn’t like Dan teaming up with Damien and Eric, he needs to start hanging out with Nate again. Also Eric is becoming rather troubled these days. Liked Chuck and Blair scheming away together, although I hope Chuck doesn’t fall for Reyna. I think this episode endeared me even more to Chuck Bass and his charming ways. Ahh to have a cuddle from Chuck Bass, the stuff dreams are made of! I’m loving the slightly more mature yet still schemey Blair. I think I have a girl crush on her. Although how she went from being an intern to being the boss, I’m not sure. However, anything is possible in Gossip Girl world, which is why so many of us love it. Also, Florence and the Machine. Ah-mazing!!!

EW, NO to Chuck and Raina!!! No chemistry WHATSOEVER. As for Serena...the girl falls in and out of love waaay too fast. The show is getting extremely senseless and dumb...if it continues like this there's no way i'm going to keep watching!

I know everyone loves blair screentime but i think thats really dangerous for the show.
Theyve got a lot of characters that fans already like and theyre letting them waste on crappy storylines.
And i absolutely hate what the writers have done to serena. First-season-Serena was not THIS stupid, had more serious reasons for liking people, and was generally more likeable. Her character has been whored out for every storyline and guy and guest character. Nate's storyline too. I like the Blair theme but i feel like too much of it will mean the end of everyone elses, and the show will get boring.
Also DAIR? What the f-, writers. They couldnt even look at each other and Blair isnt the type to date her bffs ex.

I think something might not be right in an episode if people believe a character is not going to come back and then is back in the next episode? I think everybody who commented here believed Damien was not going to be back and then the extended promo shows that he is in the next episode. Nobody was happy believing he was gone, I don't think leaving the viewer take a wrong impresstion about a character they like and it's not even a regular be a good think.

Serena makes me SICK how many times is she gonna switch guys one week shes in love with one dude and the next week its some other guy then its back to dan. and DAN is in idiot for wagging his tail and running after her every time she calls, he needs to kick her to the curb and MOVE ON. seriously she is your sister now.

So Im pretty sure it was Dan holding Blaires hand...gag me! And also Serena asks Dan "so you really do have feelings for her?" Gotta be talking about Blaire. They will not work out..eventually Blaire will miss Serena and Blaire will know that Dan has and always will love Serena. Ben is blah and needs to go. Seeing the prince pictures is pretty cool! Hopefully that goes well for Blaire! Blaire and Chuck cant just be friends..its seems like the only time they get back together is when they hate each other and then have makeup sex. But I really wonder if Serena seeing Blaire and Dan will make her jeaulous and understand that shes made a mistake and have to fight to win back Dan!

Eric is SO going to hurt himself again, what else is going to bring mother & daughter back together???

ok, I didn't really like the episode last night because of the whole Chuck/Raina thing, like really? At the beginning with the whole makeing out thing on the bed, ugh, I wanted to turn away. There didn't seem to be a lot of chemistry there. It was like Raina was just attacking him...And I'm made at Chuck for just having feeling for everyone that he's sleeping with too, he's only supposed to care for Blair, that's what made them so special. I'm all for C & B growing up but come on, he HAS to care for all these girls? This whole "caring" thing better be in his plan to get the BI back (which is not living up to what Chuck could really do, his plan is lame so far, where's the real Chuck?) Loved Blair and Nate's interactions with her trying to get him to sleep with Epperly. And Serena? Boy that girl falls in love in a snap of the fingers. Thank goodness for fanfiction, it's keeping me going and in love with C & B....

This episode made absolutely no sense at all. Serena is more of a **** than Chuck, than Nate...I seriosly think there will be a misunderstanding regarding Chuck/Raina because I'm certain he took Blair's advise literally about opening up with his heart to get to Raina. Regardless, the writers obviously have a PHD in non-sensical writing which is convoluted and contrived to the extent that the viewer is either regarded as stupid or Serena-ish!

what is with this 'I love Blair! No wait, I love Vanessa because Blair is bad! No wait, I love Eva because I'm bad! No wait, I love Raina because she's bad!' LOOOOOOL!

Either switch that thing off or bring it to bed. Vibration is a terrible thing to waste.
