That's Rich: Casting for Klaus

by at . Comments

I'm an unabashed fan of The Vampire Diaries and to those of you reading my column who are not familiar with The CW show, all I have to say is: sorry, get your own column!

Also: you really should watch it. This is not some cheesy, Twilight-esque drama aimed at 13-year old girls. It's actually a well-acted, suspenseful hour of television that guarantees at least one legitimately shocking twist each week.

As viewers await the show's January 27 return, most are asking one question: who should play Klaus, the oldest, most powerful vampire on the planet? Producers say they have been watching tapes of actors from around the world and are seeking someone with "charisma and gravitas."

Allow me to offer a pair of suggestions:

  • Brian Moser
  • Knepper

Christian Camargo
Unless you're a fan of Dexter, you might be asking: who?!? But that's partly the point. The show should aim for a relative unknown, someone viewers only see as Klaus. While stunt casting can be fun, it can also be distracting and not serve the storyline well.

Camargo is best known for playing Dexter's creepy brother on this Showtime hit's first season. We don't want to spoil anything, but, trust me, that performance proved he can be both menacing and charismatic.

Robert Knepper
Has seen his profile take off since he stole every Prison Break scene as T-Bag. He'll actually reprise that role on the upcoming drama Breakout Kings, but would be an ideal choice if he could make time for a stop in Mystic Falls.

With a smile almost as sly as Ian Somerhalder's, Knepper could go toe-to-toe, snark-to-snark with this Salvatore brother. Was so convincing as a murderous pedophile on the aforementioned Fox show that I'd never let the actor near my children. In other words: he won't have a problem scaring viewers.

What do you think of these choices? Who would you cast as Klaus? Leaving out the best, most realistic and frightening possibility, of course: Mel Gibson.

camargo would be great for this, he is so subtle in his creepyness

Jonathan reyes meyer !!!!! He should be .

I think Hayden Christenson would be the best.He is hot and young and could look like a powerful vampire, or even Vin Diesel. That is a role I have yet to see him play.

Robert Knepper is probably the best actor Prison Break ever had. And I see him doing AWESOME as a vampire. But I wonder if he doesn't seem a bit elder to what they expect Klaus to be. But otherwise, he'd be perfect!

By they way, the OLDEST living vampire is in terms of time, not an elderly man. Vampires can be centuries old and still look 20, since they stop aging when they are turned.

"Get your own column." Now, THAT'S rich. ;-) At first blush I liked your choices. But I'm wondering if Klaus would be German, given the name. And, given the Aryan background of Germany, possibly a blonde (how old is Klaus supposed to be)? The best thing on Off the Map last night was seeing Adam Campbell from Harper's Island. He's not an overly familiar face, but is quite compelling given the right material. I like that the casting has been more on the unknown side, it makes it easier to identify with the characters when they are making their own mark on the show and I don't have to remember them as someone else. When the hell is VD coming back, anyway??

OMG love both of them!!! They're fantastic actors! Christian Camargo...I don't think he'd do it, he's more into theater, but he'd be great. Robert Knepper...he's just a genius.

Those are actually two very good suggestions. While I will watch Robert Knepper in anything, based on the producers saying Gale Harold is too "mature" I think Knepper would fall into the same category. Camargo was really, really, really creepy on Dexter so I will add him to my list of Gale Harold & Michael Pitt.

Jeremy Irons or Richard Armitage would be awesome...possibly Julian Sands

Jeremy Iron's all the way!!
