Grey's Anatomy Review: "Adrift and at Peace"

by at . Comments

On last night's emotional mid-season finale of Grey's Anatomy, "Adrift and at Peace," Scott Foley (from Felicity) premiered as Teddy's new potential love interest, Henry.

Teddy tried to get the Chief to give Henry pro bono medical treatment for his serious medical problems, but the review board decided not to allow it. Then Teddy suddenly proposed to Henry so that he could have her medical insurance.

Do you think they will actually get married?

Altman Action

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT: Will Teddy actually go through with this?

Teddy's proposal seemed to come out of left field, although Teddy did explain how she wanted to do something good to make up for messing up with Cristina.

Plus, Henry and Teddy did have an undeniable spark in the elevator and during their later conversations. Is Henry going to live or die? Is he really the new Denny Duquette?

There must be some new twist to the relationship.

Derek and Cristina have been spending a lot of time together, and it looks like his strategy of giving her space so she could come to terms with her problems finally worked.

The scene in which Derek had the man take a picture of Cristina sobbing while holding her giant trout was one of the most emotional of the episode. The fact that she put the picture in such a public part of her house implied that she is ready to move on.

We'll have to wait and see when she decides to confide in Owen and Meredith, who is clearly getting jealous that Cristina won't talk to her and will do un-Cristina-like things, like fish, with Derek. Does Christina's breakthrough/breakdown mean she's ready to come back to Seattle Grace?

Cristerek

GONE FISHIN': Who knew a neurosurgeon could play psychiatrist as well.

It looks like Mark and Lexie are getting back together after all. Clearly, Jackson has a crush on Lexie, so the love triangle may get complicated.

Who do you think would be a better match for Lexie?

Owen and Meredith's showdown this episode was very interesting. Owen admitted that he feared Meredith's recklessness and her influence on Cristina, while Meredith admitted that she blamed Owen for letting Cristina fall apart.

Owen kicking Meredith out of his OR was an incredibly tense moment. One of the best parts of the show was when Meredith told the newlywed about her recovering husband, "I know right now that all you can see are the machines and the damage, but he's still there."

Owen seemed to take the words, which also apply to Cristina, to heart, so maybe he and Meredith will be able to come to more of a common ground in the upcoming episodes.

Eli, a male nurse at Seattle Grace, is another new character being introduced. Bailey's reaction to him asking her out was priceless. They might be a great team, especially since he singlehandedly solved the fistula mystery, about which Bailey had been obsessing.

The end of the episode was shocking, as Arizona arrived at Callie's front door and told her how much she had missed her, and Callie slammed the door in Arizona's face.

At this point, it's unclear whether Arizona will stay in Seattle and whether they will get back together, but Callie admitted throughout the night that she still missed Arizona.

What did you think of the episode? Tell us below! Here are some of the night's best Grey's Anatomy quotes ...

Callie: Sex with you just makes me sad. | permalink
Meredith: There are no bathrooms out there, you know?
Cristina: I know. | permalink
Henry: How do I look? I'm about to propose to my girlfriend, so besides the gown and the IV and the ghostly pallor from being in the hospital for the past week... what do you think... do I have a shot?
Teddy: She'd be a fool to say no. Good luck. | permalink
Mark [to Lexie]: I miss you! | permalink
Cristina: Can I make a suggestion.
Derek: Yeah.
Cristina: If you mount the rod-holders mid-ship, we can both reach the rods from either end of the boat. After you called last night, I did some research. I didn't want to be any less than sea-worthy.
Derek: It's a lake.
Cristina: Still.
Derek: Actually, it's ... it's a great idea.
Cristina: You may need clip-on mounts to clear the gunnels.
Derek: Are you gonna be like this all day?
Cristina: I can't help it. | permalink
April: Sparkle... that was the name of my pony. | permalink
Jackson: Anybody want my soup? It's reminding me of pancreatic fluid. | permalink
Teddy: Cristina Yang is fishing today. She is one of the most talented surgical residents I have ever seen and she is fishing instead of operating, and that is partly my fault. I just want to do something good today ... make it up, pay it forward ... whatever you want to call it. I ... I just need to do some good. | permalink
Cristina: Is this typical? I mean to go for hours without a bite?
Derek: Well, the only thing predictable about fishing is that it's unpredictable.
Cristina: Wow, that's deep.
Derek: Yeah, why don't you ponder that for a while. Quietly.
Cristina: Cristina: I can't stop. I can't turn my mind off. | permalink
Derek: You know the fish can hear you. Did you read about that in your research? Fishing is supposed to be quiet. | permalink
Meredith: I know right now all you can see are the machines and the damage, but he's still there. | permalink
Callie: I'm still awesome. | permalink
Owen: Do you want to know what I think? I think you are reckless. I think you are reckless with your own life and today you were reckless with a patient's life. I don't care who you are. I don't want that in my OR, and I don't want that around my wife who is struggling just to hold on.
Meredith: Your wife is struggling just to hold on because you married her and let it be ok for her to completely fall apart. | permalink
Meredith: The goal of any surgery is total recovery - to come out better than you were before. Some patients heal quickly and feel immediate relief. For others the healing happens gradually, and it's not until months or even years later that you realize you don't hurt anymore. So the challenge after any surgery is to be patient. But if you can make it through the first weeks and months, if you believe that healing is possible, then you can get your life back. But that's a big if. | permalink
Arizona: You look really pretty. | permalink

I would buy that excuse for Owen putting Mer in her place if he hadn't made it personal before in the past. Last season when he thought Mer told Cristina about him and Teddy he kept her out the OR. In my view he opened that can of worms last season for making it personal in the OR and this time Mer did the same thing back. She wasn't being disrespectful the first time, she was acting as a resident listening to her attending and he made it personal. He set the precedent. He can't have it both ways anymore than she can. What happened in that OR this past episode has been building for a while, it doesn't have to do with what just happened that day. Mer doesn't have great trust in Owen because of what happened last season and she feels she knows Cristina better and Owen isn't crazy about Mer because he feels she has to big of an influence on Cristina and a lot of times her word has come over his in Cristina's mind. They aren't crazy about each other, plain and simple. They have tried to be civil for Cristina's sake but each has treated each other wrong at times. As I said, no one in this situation is more right than the other. Their tension has been building for a while and it came to a head in this episode when both spoke their mind.

Oh and Owen did said that he didn't want Meredith's "recklessness" around Cristina, he basically told Meredith that she wasn't good enough to be Cristina's friends. I wonder if when Cristina comes back Meredith is going to stay away from Cristina because of what Owen told her and how Cristina is going to handle that? I'm going to laugh so hard if Meredith cuts Cristina off because of what Owen said.

Someone who is constantly worrying about some else is not fearless. Meredith is constantly worrying about her makeshift family, the writer's words.

I was rooting for Callie during the door thing.
I would shut the door on Arizona anytime after she left.

I think in the OR, Owen was 100% right. If I were him, I wouldn't have given her the first warning. That was blatant disrespect on her part, both times. Taking unnecessary risks can cost people their lives. He is the one that is going to be held accountable for anything that goes wrong, so he should be able to do it his way, without question. As far as their argument goes, I agreed and disagreed with both sides on parts. But some people seem to think he doesn't have a right to defend himself and has to just take her being disrespectful and blaming him. Yes, it is understandable that she lashes out, but it is also understandable that he lashed out back at her. He tried to be nice in the beginning and she threw that back in his face, so he doesn't have to be nice after that. If you dish it out, you have to be able to take it as well. If she can tell him what she thinks about him and his approach it isn't wrong that he does the same to her. I like Meredith much more than I do Owen, but she doesn't have a right to do or say whatever she wants without consequence.

Everyone knows Cristina is his wife and that was Mer's point. She's his wife but if we're being honest, he doesn't really know how to help her or get her back to work. Yes he suggested she go fishing with Derek but only because he didn't want her to be alone at home while he's at work, not because he knew it would fix her. Mer and Owen may love Cristina but neither have had the solution to helping her get back on her feet, its been Derek who has helped her the most because he's been at that point too where he has walked away from his career. Both Mer and Owen had their points but at the end of the day they were both wrong and no one was completely right. They both made it personal in that OR, the only reason most are defending Mer because they know she is doing it out of concern for Cristina. Cristina has basically "broken up" from Mer right now so Mer is trying to figure out whats going on from anyone she can. She doesn't feel like Owen was helping her enough so understandably she took her frustration out on him. Was she out of line, sure, but I can see where she's coming from. She can't be around Cristina right now. How would he like it if Cristina cut him off and all she went to was Mer for help. He would have an opinion too and no telling how he would deal with that frustration. Bottom line, they both stepped out of line. Owen is no more right than Mer is.

I was on Owen's side during the surgery. Meredith deserved to get kicked out, she was told multiple times not to do something and she did it anyway. Anyone else would have kicked her out as well, especially after giving her a warning. As far as their argument goes, yes he was an ass to her, but she was one to him as well. She may be dealing with losing her best friend, but Cristina is his wife. He doesn't have to sit back and just listen to her blame him about where Cristina is, especially when the, "let her figure things out on her own," approach seems to be working. Meredith thinks the only way she can be better is if she goes back to surgery, as she said that to both Owen and Derek, and that was shown to not be true. The rest of the "reckless behavior" speech I didn't really understand, but he has a right to defend himself. As long as he isn't actively trying to keep Cristina from talking to Meredith, he has a right to express his opinion about their relationship. If and when he starts to do that, that is where he would be crossing the line.

Poor Meredith, being left behind while her husband takes her best friend out fishing..
And her best friend's husband yelling at her during work ( although she sort of started it 1st)
Me thinks she's long overdue for a breakdown of her own... Btw, I really hope that after this episode, Cristina will be back to her old surgery loving kick ass self
I love Mark and Lexie together!!
I have a feeling that Callie is going to open the door again and Arizona will still be standing there- just wait for January to see ;)

Meredith is the main character in the show so it's pretty normal that most of the audience watch for her but that does not mean that she is a perfect character as a matter of fact she is one of the most flawed characters on the show and i think all of us know that she has a terrible past, i think no one was happy with her when she walked away from derek at the end of cristina's wedding or when she slept with george . But this is different and through this whole episode i was on owen's side and he was totally right to nod her head off when she yelled at him and that she doesn't know how to separate their problems from work BUT it turned out that he is the one that who was not professional , he was irritated by meredith and the fact that she obviously understand cristina more than he will ever do and that she is so sure what is best for her whether this is the best approach or not which by the way i am not agreeing with meredith on. Getting cristina back to work now is not the solution and i don't think that this was meredith opinion either she just wants to make sure that he has a plan to get her back to work anytime soon and owen clearly does not have a clue how to do this so he took all his frustration on meredith and treated her unfairly because this fearless reckless women did save his life while she was painfully miscarrying her baby and no one else BUT mer could have done this any other women would have just fell on the ground sobbing or something .But because mer is who she is a person who owen knows nothing about she kept on working on him despite anything else .and by the way because meredith know cristina very well she knows that now her being around crsitina is not going to help her at all because in cristina's opinion mer is the reason for what had happened to her. so despite the fact that meredith is my favorite character yes owen is an a@@ who needs to get a grip of himself and figure out a way to help his wife other than coming up with things for her to do that will just distract her not that the fishing did not help cristina ,it did . but this is only because derek knew exactly what cristina wants which is again more the owen do.

I realize that some of you only watch for Meredith and therefore reflexively take her side in everything, but luckily for the rest of us the writers have a more balanced view of the show and the characters. Owen was exactly correct - - Meredith is fearless; she always has been. Derek described her exactly that way when he proposed to her, and I'm sure then you all thought that was sweet and romantic. Owen is entitled to think Mer's behavior was reckless in that OR on the day of the shooting, and also in the OR on the day of this episode. On the day of the shooting, Owen also walked into the OR with the shooter there. He was prepared to take a bullet if he had to, to save Cristina, but what he said to Clark was "Hey, talk to me." His goal was to distract Clark, to give Cristina time, to save her and Derek; he was completely willing to risk getting shot but he didn't ASK to be shot. Mer did - - she went in and said to Clark "Kill me" (and, btw, her unborn baby). And Owen took that bullet to save MEREDITH - he jumped Clark because in that moment it was clear that Clark was going to shoot Meredith and Cristina asked him (her look to him was totally clear) to save her friend. And Mer WAS reckless in the OR with Owen and the guy who fell. Instead of letting Owen think through what to do, she kept yelling at him. He wasn't letting the guy "just bleed out" as she claimed; he never stopped operating. He was deciding what to do next. And even after her outburst, he let her repair the liver. She ignored his instructions and refused to stop after he made the decision that another stitch could put the patient at risk. She is a fourth year resident. He is an attending with many, many more years of experience than she has, and because of his time in Iraq has sewed up more trauma victims then Meredith will probably see in her entire career. She was arrogant and disrespectful in ignoring his instructions in the OR. Owen and Meredith both love Cristina, and they both want to help her. They disagree on how to do that. But apparently Derek agrees with Owen, and the fishing trip that they thought was a good idea does seem to have been one, doesn't it? Meanwhile, Meredith's plan seems limited to "Cristina has to get back to work", which doesn't seem like a very effective plan since Cristina has refused to do that. So no, Owen is not an a@@. He's a man struggling to help his wife, who is going through a very tough time. And getting yelled at by his wife's "best friend" (who, BTW, doesn't seem to have had a conversation with or reached out to her supposed "best friend" AND whose life he saved) isn't helping. Before Meredith accuses someone else of being ineffectual in helping Cristina, she should look in the mirror.

She [Christina] doesn't do the wildnerness. There aren't even any bathrooms in the wilderness.

The first 24 hours after surgery are critical. Every breath you take, every fluid you make, is meticulously reported and analyzed. Celebrated or mourned. But what about the next 24 hours? What happens with that first day turns to two and weeks turn into months? What happens when the immediate danger has passed, when the machines are disconnected and the teams of doctors and nurses are gone? Surgery is when you get saved, but post-op, after surgery, is when you heal. But, what if you don't?
