Grey's Anatomy: Boring Without MerDer Conflict?

at . Comments

Has the seventh season of Grey's Anatomy disappointed you at all?

If you think so, the lack of focus on Meredith may be one of your issues. The miscarriage, the aftermath of the shooting, the house, a baby, the relationships with Lexie and Thatcher, a big decision regarding her medical specialty ... we've seen little exploration of any.

Season Seven has, in large part, centered around Cristina Yang and Calzona. Has the show's "core" couple been relegated to the back burner? Will that change?

Does a lack of MerDer conflict make for a dull Grey's Anatomy.

In his column today, TV Guide's Matt Roush says the reason MerDer hasn't been featured as prominently lately may have to do with them being a happy couple.

Meredith's reveal of her miscarriage was anti-climactic, but the greater issue here is a lack of serious conflict. Occasional flare-ups at work, yes, but rarely at home.

Without conflict on a melodrama, there's not a lot. With the bulk of the shooting recovery arc over, perhaps Cristina will be back to normal. Then there's Calzona.

That recent conflict was built in to give Jessica Capshaw maternity leave, but may run its course soon as well. So will MerDer will return to the forefront shortly?

The upside, of course, is that the Post-It symbolizes forever. They are together for good. If they won't split up again, there's less conflict ... but it's a good thing.

Right? Can they still be interesting, albeit slightly boring? ARE they boring or is everything right with MerDer and Grey's? Leave a comment with your thoughts.

I don't see MerDer as boring at all. I love seeing them settled together. They're marriage is a friendship and that's fantastic. Their relationship being settled allows them to be more involved with the other characters, and other stories. I love watching Derek be there for Christina. Especially, considering that they've never been too fond of one another. The tension between Meredith and Owen is very compelling as well. I'm not sure where it's going to lead, but I'm excited to find out. It is tough to watch Mer and Christina be so distant but it's interesting to see both be in positions that neither can help the other with. Calzona is awesome!! The character of Karev has developed tremendously. I used to hate him, now I can't imagine an episode without him. Peter MacNicol is great because he's a way bigger ass than Karev, and it makes me love Karev more. I love Lexie. I just do. I love everything about her. As much as I want her to be with Sloan, I kind of want her to hook up with Avery. Just because he's hot and pining for her. Teddy is amazing. Best casting decision in the history of television. There will never, ever be another Dr. Bailey, ever. Go fistulas!!!! :) So Grey's is far from boring. Basing the interest of the show solely on two characters is wrong and completely unfair to the rest of the cast and Grey's clearly has an amazing cast.

@ Neko. Grey's Anatomy refers to the character Meredith Grey and the anatomy of her life as a surgical resident. Gray's Anatomy is the medical text book med students use for anatomy lectures. Shonda used a pun for her title. The title has nothing to do with Baileys interns. Get ur facts str8 b4 you make Opinions.

OMG people everyones character favorites are a matter of opinion. NOT EVERYONE that loves the show, and is a fan of the show has to be a fan of Mer/Der. One of the main reasons the show is so popular is because there are so many different personalities, and theres literally someone for every type of person to love. No one is right or wrong over the other. If someone things Meredith is boring they are entitled to it, just like if someone thinks that Meredith is the star and best part of the show they are entitled to that. Meredith USED to be the center of the show yes, but they are weening her from that because Ellen Pompeo has made it very clear in numerous interview(google it) that she most likely will NOT continue after 8 seasons, while SHONDA has made it very clear, that she DOES want to continue the show even after main characters may leave. I have been a VERY VERY loyal fan since DAY 1 pilot episode, and I am too loyal of a fan to stop watching just because Mer, Der, or even Lexie or Alex(who are my faves) leave. I am a loyal fan that wants the show to continue on long after my faves may be gone, because I like the show for the story lines, and the story's. Lets just stop with the what character is better then the other, because it will never get anywhere, because it is all a matter of someones opinion. Mer/Der shippers and fans are gonna be angry that they arent getting good storylines, just like other shippers get mad when mer/der have all the attention....lets give it a rest

I think this is a great show. Even if the core couple have been relegated to the background, it just allows other characters to flower and come into their own, eg. Callie. I thought she was a silly addition in Season 2, but she surprised me! I am actually glad that the MerDer situation is not volatile, as in, I really would not want to see them squabble, there are like meant to be together forever, and a miscarriage should not be the cause for separation(it was not Mer's fault, although I agree she should have told him long ago).I think such a situation should only bring a couple more close to each other, rather than drive a wedge between them.

@sara : I'm not saying i know better than everybody what a good character is or is not. I am just saying, that meredith had never been interesting for me. So, the show is called Grey's anatomy as a reference to the medical book. The story is not "about" her but about the 5 "students" of Bailey and how they will succeed (or not, sorruy georges and izzy) ! The show would have been quite the same without her (for me it would have been better but that's no main opinion here) !

neko blahh than you don't know what an interesting character is. If she was perfect from the begining and MerDer got together from the start without drama than what GA would be like lol? How can they ever kill Meredith Grey, the lead character and the true Grey? She's the center of the show even if they didn't show it like that lately.

Meredith has never been an interesting character of this show. She's so boring as the couple she forms with McDreamy (ON/OFF/ON/OFF/DEAD/ALIVE/HOUSE/NOHOUSE/POSTIT/BABY/NOBABY).
I think that we will see an angry christina soon, angry about how meredith deals with the christinagate ! that will be mer major storyline of season 7 !
I wish the shooter killed meredith ...

@User I don't think he knows. I wish she'll tell him in 7x11.

But ofcourse, if they every quarrel, it's best tht it's not too long. Cause it is totally unbearable to see them at logger heads too. And! Does Derek even know about mer sacrificing herself?? That's unfair if he doesn't!

I agree that it's disappointing because they're not focusing on merder! I want them to have like quarrels here and there that'll lead to hot make up sex. We have been missing those super sweet moments with merder alr!! NEED some of that!!

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

There's a reason I said I'd be happy alone. It wasn't 'cause I thought I'd be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It's easier to be alone, because what if you learn that you need love and you don't have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It's like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.
