Grey's Anatomy: Boring Without MerDer Conflict?

at . Comments

Has the seventh season of Grey's Anatomy disappointed you at all?

If you think so, the lack of focus on Meredith may be one of your issues. The miscarriage, the aftermath of the shooting, the house, a baby, the relationships with Lexie and Thatcher, a big decision regarding her medical specialty ... we've seen little exploration of any.

Season Seven has, in large part, centered around Cristina Yang and Calzona. Has the show's "core" couple been relegated to the back burner? Will that change?

Does a lack of MerDer conflict make for a dull Grey's Anatomy.

In his column today, TV Guide's Matt Roush says the reason MerDer hasn't been featured as prominently lately may have to do with them being a happy couple.

Meredith's reveal of her miscarriage was anti-climactic, but the greater issue here is a lack of serious conflict. Occasional flare-ups at work, yes, but rarely at home.

Without conflict on a melodrama, there's not a lot. With the bulk of the shooting recovery arc over, perhaps Cristina will be back to normal. Then there's Calzona.

That recent conflict was built in to give Jessica Capshaw maternity leave, but may run its course soon as well. So will MerDer will return to the forefront shortly?

The upside, of course, is that the Post-It symbolizes forever. They are together for good. If they won't split up again, there's less conflict ... but it's a good thing.

Right? Can they still be interesting, albeit slightly boring? ARE they boring or is everything right with MerDer and Grey's? Leave a comment with your thoughts.

Shonda Rhimes has said via twitter and all over the place that GA is about Meredith Grey and the people in her life. For god sake in the season 6 finale and episode which Shonda Rhimes herself wrote. The first part of the finale the voice over was all about Meredith saying that the hospital is her home. That wasn't put in there to just sound pretty. This show is dissecting the Grey side of life, and the only character that can totally see the Grey is Meredith.

@Dr.Cerreno : Do read my comment again and try to understand. I agree the title is a pun ! I have never said that the title refers to baileys interns but I say that's what the show is really about ! So don't get all text-message angry, then watch the pilot again ... The title is just a fun pun and i think your try to hard to theorize about it. The show has never been about Mer's life but the life of the interns of SG.

I think shonda likes any kind of controversy following her show. Obviously its not going anywhere, the ratings may not be what they were in seasons 1 and 2 but they are still up for Mer/Der not being the center of attention right now, lets everyone just take a deep breath together....I'm sure their time is coming! Everyone lets just chill

If you guys think you can write the show so much better move to L.A. and write your own show. Jesus this thread is ridiculous....I didnt want to post but I couldnt help it. I love Greys! I love Mer. I love Der. I even love april. I love every single thing about the show.

@anuflas the writers blog this season is full of MDers asking the writers for Meredith/MerDer to have a storyline and screentime! And twitter asking SR and Krista.. But I guess they are too lazy to write a grown up storyline for a married couple. Even if PD and EP have till S8, why they don't use them instead of 30 sec each episode? And when they do talk it's about Cristina! I guess a triangle after triangle and a repeat storyline of Izzie and Denny no2 is more important..

And something the recent entry blogs...this one has the most comments in the shortest time. I guess no matter how much anyone loves another couple, M/D will have always a central piece. Funny.

You all are funny. You think ya have problems. My favorite couple the one took off to africa. And the other one that (we thought was in love with her) Couldn't keep her scrubs on and slept with a freakin idiot manwhore. Whoever is writting this crap. Needs to go and take a lesson in creative writting. Cause they think anytime they don't know what to do with one of there actors. They throw them into bed with someone. Jcap is gone 2 eppy's and they had to break up and Callie sleep with Mark. It is just stupid. Why not have Jcap go home cause one of her parent died or something anything besides the break up and Callie acting like a moran. As for MerDer, EP has already said she is only contracted till season 8 and she isn't going to renew her contract after season 8. And PD said the same, he wants to have more time for his racing and to do other things. Shonda said she is trying to have other actors come in and fill the void when they are gone. Cause she said she would like to see the show run as long as ER did. I think that was what 15 yrs? But I'm with you all I think MerDer need to talk about the shooting and her losing the baby. And to get the new house built so they can move out of the frat house. Grey's is a good show and I love it dearly. But the way they do things is just annoying. They swap up and the writters take turns writing the eppy's. So they leave so many things up in the air and not finished. I personally think that each writter should have a couple they write for. That way they know there couple and they don't leave us to wonder whatever happen to a story line they started and didn't finish. I wanna see the Mc House the Mc Baby and a Mc Wedding. LOL!!! And I wanna see Calzone get married and Callie in that big white dress dancing down the isle. And Callie having 15 kids. (With Mark NOT being the Baby Daddy) And Mark needs to get back with Lexie. Before AZ beats him with a brick:) Cause he slept with her ex girlfriend. Which she still loves.

I don't care how of loyal fan I am, I am a loyal fan of PD, EP, & SO. So if they leave, won't doubt that I will. For a lot of people (I suggest everyone to take a walk in the writer's blog), M/D are vital to the show and what they bring, which in this season is nothing. I don't see anything in the M/D front, anything. There is no story. No continuation, nothing. Their story was once the central story of the is nothing. I have no interest in watching the horrible treatment of the six originals after EP calls it quits. Teddy has more of a story than the central characters. Jackson's PTSD is treated more than Derek's, who should have his treated as well. The miscarriage was dropped as it if meant nothing. How can that happen? How does SR allow it?

i can't even recall the countless times people on this fan site have asked for more good and happy merder moments. i don't think that the lack of conflict makes for boring tv- i think we would be just as happy to actually get to see them happy. and not just for 3 minutes of air time.

I love the show the way it is. I think not having everything centered around MerDer makes me miss them more. The show has to center on the other characters for it to stay fresh and keep ppl interested. I like MerDer. But I'm in love with Calzona. I'm loving their storyline. The ups, downs, sideways all of it. And yes I am a lesbian. I appreciate Shonda for creating their story and representing me in some way. And I thank Sara for volunteering herself to be a part of this love story. So yes for me I am in Heaven.
With that being said I also love the attention Christina is getting. Her story drags along but I'm loving seeing Sandra's acting. She deserves it.
Im also enjoying Mark. Glad to see he's back with Lexie. Hoping they can work it out.
I know I'm in the minority but I also like Teddy, Jackson,April, and Alex.
Bailey rules, enough said LOL
I'm a fan no matter what but this season I am happy. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts. CALZONA FOREVER!!!!

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

There's a reason I said I'd be happy alone. It wasn't 'cause I thought I'd be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It's easier to be alone, because what if you learn that you need love and you don't have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It's like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.
