The Mentalist Review: "Ball of Fire"

We were treated to another great episode of The Mentalist this week. Multiple shootings, two kidnappings, a car fire and a cattle prod?  That’s a lot to pack into one hour.

It was wonderful seeing the whole CBI crew working as a team on "Ball of Fire," as they set out to find Jane.  Each member had his/her unique role to play.  I liked the nod to Rigsby’s time working arson investigations in San Diego.  It made sense that he’d find something in the burned car that Agent O’Loughlin missed.

Farm Stand Kidnapping

When Grace had to look through Jane’s desk and found the secret note taped to the top of the drawer that said “Stop Looking Inside My Desk,”  I had to laugh.

Rigsby and O’Loughlin worked well together.  They’re obviously both professionals, but what was with O’Loughlin’s reaction to Rigsby telling him not to hurt Grace? O’Loughlin’s response (Or what?) came off as cocky to me.  It’s the first time the character has given me a reason not to like him.

Lisbon was noticeably shaken by Jane’s abduction, but recovered well once the investigation was on its way.

As for Jane, he never apologized to Rachel or lied or begged for his life, even while being cattle prodded.  Speaking of her father, Jane said :“He was a thief and a murderer and I did everything I could to catch him.”  Does that make him smart, reckless or just plain arrogant?  I’m really not sure.

My favorite scene was the banter at the end between Lisbon and Jane.  Relieved to be alive and happy to be in one another’s company, they joked about solving cases without him, fruit, and cattle prods.  How can you not love that?

Once again Robin Tunney's performance was great. Especially when she questioned Linus Wagner. When he brought up the fact that he was going to death row, remember what she said and the expression on her face. That was great acting, on her part, very convincing.

She was also very snappy with that press lady about the statement. Her body language and her voice showed that she hated being distracted by this and wanted nothing more than get Jane back quickly.

I wished they'd mentioned the ending of Red Hot at least somehow. I hope they don't forget about the Mashburn/Lisbon encounter. I mean it's not necessary for Currie Graham to return to bring it up again. Though I hope he comes back for some more episodes soon.

Where did Patrick get the blood to smear on himself and Lisbon? Not very healthy and also impossible to use a dead man's since it already had darkened and coagulated, you can't cut a dead man for new blood, and I didn't see a cut on him or Lisbon to produce such a large amount. Tip to makeup people, when someone is torture with electrical impulses, their reactions causes a distinctive tearing at their shackles. Details, details people.

Yeah, Jane, don't be so blunt, arrogant and hurtful when you talk about thieves and murderers to crazy people

Yes, The doctor was from the pilot episode and all he did was give Lisbon info as to who Rachel was. I wish Lisbon would look up at the person she is speaking to instead of always gazing down, it makes it seem that she isn't in control or is afraid of forgetting her lienes if she looks into their eyes. Being cattle prodded over and over is not only quite painful but creates an imbalance to a shocked system. If it is done over and over, it should have had him in tears, and maybe he'll learn not to be so blunt and arrogant when talking to people, it can be quite hurtful and see where it got him. It was good to see Hightower exert her authority and be the one to come and finish the job. A good show this time.

@ele @Stevie Actually not. They said the case of Rachel's dad happened 3 years ago, so that's before the show started. The guy from pilot just helped a bit to solve the case.
