Grey's Anatomy Round Table: Season Six Finale

at . Comments

Welcome to the TV Fanatic Grey's Anatomy Round Table, in which our panelists discuss the burning questions from the previous episode - in this case, the season finale.

Topics for our "Sanctuary" and "Death and All His Friends" Round Table Q&A include memorable quotes and performances, what the future holds and much, much more:

1. What was your favorite Grey's Anatomy quote from the episode?

L.J. Gibbs: I liked Derek's attempt, however nearly ill-fated, to disarm the shooter, staring down the barrel of the gun. He pleaded his case as a human being, with sympathy for Mr. Clark even with his own life being threatened. Just as I imagine Derek would.

M.L. House: Derek's "I'm not gonna die." Thanks for stating the obvious, buddy! (Warning: my feelings on the episode don't get much more positive from here.)

Mrs. Northman: Meredith: "You want justice right? Your wife died, I know what happened. Derek told me the story. Lexie Grey is the one that pulled the plug on your wife, she's my sister. Dr. Webber, he was your wife's doctor. I'm the closest thing he has to a daughter. And the man on the table, I'm his wife. If you wanna hurt them, the way that you hurt, shoot me. I'm your eye for an eye." This scene gave me the chills.

2. Was this the best episode of the year - and/or the whole series?

L.J. Gibbs: Definitely the best of the season and probably in my top five from Season One-present. Despite the hype and a situation that felt a little forced, it still came through with one moving scene after another and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

M.L. House: Maybe and no. Look, the series is at its best when it focuses on these layered, flawed characters and builds true emotion that emanates from well-paced storylines. Case in point, my favorite episode of all-time: the season two finale. Denny's death was months in the making and the fallout from that, understandably, was felt for many seasons to come.

Mrs. Northman: YES! I haven't been so engaged in an episode as much as I was last night! Definitely the best episode ever! As much as Mr. Clark was a give away as the shooter, I couldn't believe he was A-wall and killed so many people!

3. Mr. Clark on the loose: Well-written and emotional, or contrived and manipulative?

L.J. Gibbs: It felt like the latter to me all week long. Then I actually saw the episode, and came around. The premise may have been a little much, and some of the believability of the standoff debatable, but it was compelling television with the characters we've gotten to know all playing crucial, memorable roles in the drama. What more can you ask for?

M.L. House: Utterly contrived and manipulative. This is an extension of my answer above. Instead of delivering an interesting season that built toward a naturally emotional finale, Shonda Rhimes threw in a random event that forced viewers to suspend disbelief in order to forcefully pull at our heart strings. How convenient, for example, that SWAT didn't break in until after Shonda had squeezed every drop of sadness out. Even Mr. Clark himself was not written consistently: if he really wanted "eye for an eye" justice, why did he kill a handful of people in cold blood? It was cheap writing that relied on a gimmick in order to shock us for nothing but shock's sake.

Mrs. Northman: I thought it was well written and keeps us wanting more! I can't wait to see how everyone will deal with all this crazy drama.

4. What were the saddest and most uplifting moments of the finale?

L.J. Gibbs: The saddest, to me, was Meredith's miscarriage. I knew Derek, Owen and Alex would make it, it's hard to mourn Mercy Westers we knew were going to be killed off, and Mer's loss, which was very sad on its own merit, came out of nowhere. Most uplifting? The redemption of Richard Webber, who had fallen on hard times all season long.

M.L. House: Owen uplifted me. He actually went BACK into the quasi war zone in order to rescue Cristina. Same for Arizona and Callie. Their reconciliation scene was beautiful. But nothing made me sad. I refused to shed any tears because the episode didn't earn its emotion.

Mrs. Northman: There were so many sad moments last night! One of the saddest moments had to be Meredith having the miscarriage. The most uplifting moment had to be Arizona telling Callie that she wants to have a family and a ton of children!

5. Which actor/actress' performance was most Emmy-worthy?

L.J. Gibbs: Michael O'Neill has to win for Guest Star. Had he not been so outstanding as Mr. Clark, the entire episode would not have carried the weight it did. As for the regular cast? So many worthy candidates, but I'm going with Sandra Oh. She's always worthy, but perhaps this was the coup de grace that finally wins her that elusive honor.

M.L. House: Ellen Pompeo. Even given cheesy lines that, again, are meant to mess with the viewers' emotions (I chose you! I picked you!), she makes us feel Meredith's heart breaking at the prospect of losing her Post-It husband.

Mrs. Northman: It has to be a toss up between Cristina working on Derek's heart while Mr. Clark has a gun to her head or Bailey trying - but failing - to save her coworkers life.

What a Pretty Face
Derek the Chief

Hopefully this wasn't the first and only crack at a McBaby.

6. Will Meredith tell Derek about the baby?

L.J. Gibbs: She will. Then they'll try for another and this time, it will take (please)!

M.L. House: Yes. These two have matured as a couple and it's the right thing to do.

Mrs. Northman: She has to! She can't keep him in the dark forever on this one. It wouldn't be right.

7. Does Lexie really love Alex?

L.J. Gibbs: Part of her definitely does, but that was said in the heat of the moment. I think that he called out for Izzie in his time of need speaks volumes about where he is with their relationship, and will lead Lexie back to Mark.

M.L. House: Lexie doesn't know what she wants or who she loves. But she does now know that Alex really lives Izzie and this relationship is over.

Mrs. Northman: I am not sure. I think she loves him, but he was dying and in extreme situations make you think less clearly. And it is obvious that Alex is still in love with Izzie - which kind of puts me back on team Slexie!

8. Do you like voiceovers?

L.J. Gibbs: The TV critic in me does not. The inner cheeseball totally does.

M.L. House: Are you kidding?!? They treat the audience like we're idiots. Just trust your storytelling, Shonda. When Derek is lying in a pool of his own blood, why interrupt that scene with Meredith's cliche-ridden narration? Please stop dumbing your show down and believe that we're smart enough to understand what's going on, and what we should be feeling, without Meredith telling us all about it.

Mrs. Northman: I do! It can be a pain when you're jotting down Grey's Anatomy quotes, but Meredith always has really good words of wisdom to correlate with the episode.

What do you think? Weigh in with your own answers/comments!

@smileyglen, If you read carefully, Mrs. Northman uses the phrase "A-Wall". It (AWOL) doesn't mean what she thinks it means.

1. My favourite quote was when Meredith was saying her speech to Mr. Clark, telling him to shot her. It gives me chills every time I watch it! And I watch it a lot!!! 2. I thought it was the best episode yet! It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole episode and it had me lughing in the beginning but crying within the first 10 minutes!! 3. All I know is Mr. Clark is CRAZY!!! 4. The saddest parts were either Meredith thinking Derek was dead or Merediths Miscarriage or when Meredith was with derek on the catwalk after he had been shot!! The most up-lifting part was probably Callie and Arizona getting back together or the fact that Derek didn't actually die!! 5. Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh 100% :D 6. I think she will tell Derek about the baby, I hope she does. Because we don't want Meredith to go back to her Dark and twisties. 7. No, I don't think Lexie really loves Alex. I think she felt like she was one of the reason Alex got shot and was scared and said it because she was in shock. 8. Yes I love the voice overs.

@M.L House Thanks, I tend to veer off track all the time. All valid points. And everyone can agree to disagree. How boring would life be if we all thought the same way. Yea to go off track again, any ideas for what to expect in Season 7. Shonda has hinted at a crossover with Amelia & Carolyn Shepherd.

@ McShip You're welcome! I rewatched the scene just before I posted it to make sure I had it right. It was such a great quote...I didn't want to mess it up ;)

ML house I don't cry over GA either don't feel bad it's ok to have a diffrence of opinon (it would be boring if everyone thought the same thing) 1. What was your favorite Grey's Anatomy quote from the episode? Alex: "Eat more bacon, have more sex!" (Loved the light humor and it was totally Alex)
Mer's speech about an eye for an eye (my god)
"I love you I chose you" (loved the parallel from S2)
A lot of other quotes 2. Was this the best episode of the year - and/or the whole series? This bumped S5 to #1 on favorite GA season finales (by a very slim margin)It was amazing and shocking my god 3. Mr. Clark on the loose: Well-written and emotional, or contrived and manipulative? well written (even though there were some off things like the SWAT team it's a show there's bound to be screwups) 4. What were the saddest and most uplifting moments of the finale? Saddest moments:
-Alex calling out for Izzie (I was such a huge A/I fan it broke my heart but made me happy @ the same time that it kept their love alive)
-Mer's miscarriage (but I knew it was going to happen)
-Percy dying in Bailey's arms
-Derek's operation 5. Which actor/actress' performance was most Emmy-worthy? If Chandra Wilson does not get an emmy I will be pissed (she was AMAZING!)
Justin Chambers this is his year(my god he made me love Alex so much :D) 6. Will Meredith tell Derek about the baby? Yes but not right away they have grown as a couple 7. Does Lexie really love Alex?
No and Alex calling Izzie out proved they can't be together 8. Do you like voiceovers? They are what make GA unique to me (especially the different ones)

:D Thanks for the real quote for Owen in the OR, protecting Cristina. I deleted Grey's off my DVR (my dad always does it so I thought I'd do it on my own) and now I can't replay it. Anyway, thanks! :)

1. What was your favorite Grey's Anatomy quote from the episode? Mer when she was telling Alice what she has went through to find out how she felt about Derrick and that she doesn't get to cry over Derrick 2. Was this the best episode of the year - and/or the whole series? Yes, I was not feeling season 6 at all, it had some good episodes but not as good as all the other seasons. The finale made up for all of season 6. 3. Mr. Clark on the loose: Well-written and emotional, or contrived and manipulative? mixed feelings. The episode was well written but why shoot all the other people if he was on a mission for the people who was involved with his wife's situation. 4. What were the saddest and most uplifting moments of the finale? I didn't care for the mercy westers (except Avery) but it was sad how they was taken out especially how Charles died. The misscarrage was sad because Mer lost the baby after she declared that she knew she wanted derrick and wanted his children. Most uplifting? Christina steping up and doing the surgery and the chief stepping up and being the CHIEF! 5. Which actor/actress' performance was most Emmy-worthy? Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson For Christina to keep going with the surgery with a gun to her head and would not stop, showed how much of a bad ass surgen she is. Bailey relizing that she could not have any control of the situation and her reaction was terrific. 6. Will Meredith tell Derek about the baby? No, this is Greys Anatomy. There has not been a secret for a while. He won't find out for a couple of episodes and when he does it will probably be that chick Alice (I think that's her name) that will end up telling him. 7. Does Lexie really love Alex? no that girl is just confused and the situation was just emotional so she just went with it. 8. Do you like voiceovers? The voice overs are the best. They set the emotion, let us know what the character is feeling and set the mood of the show. I would hate if they got rid of the voiceovers.

1. What was your favorite Grey's Anatomy quote from the episode? I liked all of Alex and Cristina's dialogues. They were themselves in this finale while the others were just taking turns with cheesy speeches. 2. Was this the best episode of the year - and/or the whole series? No. 3. Mr. Clark on the loose: Well-written and emotional, or contrived and manipulative? Not well-written and emotional. I agree with M. L House on this. There are always things going on throughout the season which grow big in the finale and we get to see the outcome of each storyline. Season 6 has been the worst in my opinion. Since it was so messed up, Shonda needed to come up with a major event out of the blue, add in all the possible cliched 'twists in it and there we have it - the most emotional and dramatic finale till date. I didn't see how it was a game-changer for any character. If I pretend I watched another show, it was great. Otherwise I just didn't get the real Grey's feeling from it. When I saw the promo, I did think it would be shocking. However, when I finally watched the finale I kept waiting for one moment to gasp at. It never came. 4. What were the saddest and most uplifting moments of the finale? I did not cry. Charles dying, big deal. I didn't know the character enough to cry over his death, neither did I like him in the first place.
The whole Derek getting shot stuff - as if he was gonna die. I was hoping Shonda wouldn't go in that melodramatic direction. But she did. Having the heartthrob of the show shot then an intense recovery scene is tear-worthy stuff, but it's an old, cheesy and cliched way to play with the viewers' emotions.
However I did think Alex talking to 'Izzie' was emotional, I'm a big Izzex fan. I mean I was a big fan. Most uplifting: Cristina operating on Derek while Mr. Clark puts a gun to her head. 5. Which actor/actress' performance was most Emmy-worthy? Sandra Oh.
Chandra Wilson.
Mr. Clark. Justin Chambers was great too. 6. Will Meredith tell Derek about the baby? I would like her to. He should know. But I'm not sure if she will. 7. Does Lexie really love Alex? No. They got together only because both were alone and vulnerable at the time. Mark broke up with Lexie, and Izzie left Alex. Her 'love' for him was just comfort since he was shot and she was feeling guilty about it. She was thinking he might die too. She may care about Alex but she loves Mark. 8. Do you like voiceovers? Sometimes. In certain scenes they add to the emotion, while in others they're just unnecessary.

1. What was your favorite Grey's Anatomy quote from the episode? Owen: Hey! Hey! That is the woman that I love! You shoot her, you touch her, and I will kill you! I don't even like Owen but I loved that line LOL 2. Was this the best episode of the year - and/or the whole series? It was definitely the best episode of season 6. The best of the series? That's a tough call. It definitely ranks as one of the very best though. 3. Mr. Clark on the loose: Well-written and emotional, or contrived and manipulative? I thought it was well-written even if a bit contrived at some points. And it was definitely emotional, but I would have liked to have seen a bit of concern for one another since they were all separated and didn't know exactly who had been shot or not. They were all so isolated in their separate stories and they are such a close group of friends/family. 4. What were the saddest and most uplifting moments of the finale? The saddest for me was definitely Charles' death while Bailey held his head in her lap. I didn't even care for the character, but the helplessnses of their particular situation really made me feel for all three of them. Most uplifting? Seeing the Chief basically reclaim his hospital. Now all we need it for it to be made official. 5. Which actor/actress' performance was most Emmy-worthy? Sandra Oh. The woman is beyond fantastic. Chandra Wilson was very good as well...although the scene at the elevator when she realized they were shut down was a bit OTT. 6. Will Meredith tell Derek about the baby? I don't see how she can keep something like that from him. It was as much his baby as it was hers, and if she doesn't say something about it, I'm sure someone else will. Cristina announced it to the entire OR and April and Owen were there when she miscarried. 7. Does Lexie really love Alex? I think Lexie definitely cares about Alex and she feels somewhat loyal to him because he has been there for her for the past few months...not to mention the fact that she feels incredibly guilty about him getting shot because she was part of the reason why Mr. Clark was on a rampage in the first place, but I think she is confusing that loyalty and guilt with love. I think once Alex gets better and she's able to think clearly, she will realize that she does not really love him. She knows what it is like to be in love with someone because she was in love with Mark for a long time and I think she still is even though she claims she is over him, and sooner or later she will realize that while she cares about Alex, it is not the same as the kind of love that she feels for Mark. 8. Do you like voiceovers? I love them. I think it sets up the tone for the entire episode and wraps it up quite nicely as well. The show is called "Grey's Anatomy" .. how else are we supposed to get insight into Meredith Grey's anatomy without her voiceovers?

Matt richenthal

@smileyglen: I agree with your gun rights argument, but we seem to be going off track. It's patently UNrealistic for a gunman to just saunter around a hospital, killing various doctors, while others called and pleaded on 911. SWAT standing outside was nothing but an illogical plot device, so Shonda could conjure up other emotional scenes. It's lazy and it's manipulative. As for George: he could have been sent off to Iraq and been off the show. But Shonda tossed him in front of a bus just for shock and rating's sake.

Grey's Anatomy Season 6 Episode 24 Quotes

Cristina: You're freaking me out and I don't have time to be freaked out right now. Mer is a mess. Derek is a mess. You are a mess and I am in charge and I say that no one is down her.
Jackson: You're not supposed to be walking around.
Cristina: Damn it Jackson.

[narrating] The human life is made up of choices. Yes or no. In or out. Up or down. And then there are the choices that matter. Love or hate. To be a hero or to be a coward. To fight or to give in. To live. Or die. Live or die. That's the important choice. And it's not always in our hands.
