Gossip Girl Season Finale Review: The End of the Beginning

by at . Comments

OMG ... or would WTF be more accurate?

No one can take this away from Gossip Girl's third season finale: It delivered the shocking twists and that fans of the ongoing emotional roller coaster have come to expect.

But were you turned off by the cliffhangers and scandalous developments of "Last Tango, Then Paris," or that much more intrigued to see the saga continue in September?

The episode basically tore down everything about Gossip Girl that had been created up until now, a bold move that's sure to be polarizing among the show's fan community.

There are two reactions, basically:

  1. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Chuck and Jenny?! WTF! Chuck shot!?! WTF again!! You killed Chuck (possibly in more ways than one)! OMG I am so DONE with this show!
  2. Wow. That was intense. Talk about cranking the drama up to a new level! I didn't see any of that coming, and can't wait for Season Four to find out what's next.

Which camp are you in?

Bluck Bickers

Chuck and Blair: The saga continues this summer.

Some aspects were a bit over the top, but the more we think about it, the more we find ourselves leaning toward category #2. No matter how painful last night was to watch.

Having Chuck and Blair thisclose to a fairy tale ending, only to be torn apart once again, was heartbreaking. That's the point. Sometimes you can't tie everything up perfectly.

There will be another chapter, too. Mark my words, "Last Tango, Then Paris" was not Chair's last tango. He was shot (trying to recover Blair's ring), but he will live. So breathe.

Chuck getting shot in Prague may feel cold, a cheap move by the writers. But perhaps only an event that serious can finally bring Chair together for good, even if it takes time.

Rather than being the end of Chair, and of Gossip Girl as we knew it, last night was merely the end of the beginning chapters - and maybe the next ones will be even better.

Not only does this plot set the stage for a dramatic reunion in Europe, it adds a new component to their relationship: Will Chuck facing his own mortality change him - or Blair?

A couple this epic is going to have to face obstacles, especially with the kind of baggage Chuck carries. Whether they overcome them is the question, and I'm inclined to say yes.

That said, we can't let Chuck, Jenny or the writers off the hook entirely.

The thought of him turning to Jenny at all, and her cashing in her V-card, was nauseating and seemed out of character, even for the mercurial Chuck Bass and Jenny Humphrey.

That Chuck would do that to Blair, or Jenny would do that after Season One, seemed unlikely. But maybe it was the only thing unthinkable enough to set future events in motion.

(While we're being critical, why would B not text Chuck to say she was running a couple of minutes late? Clearly she didn't miss him by much. What was it, 7:08? Just asking.)

Little JH

Don't let the door hit you on the way out, J.

You have to admit, though, it was compelling TV. Right along with Chuck, you wanted to forget about J as soon as B walked in, to begin anew as you intended from the start.

You hoped it would somehow never come to light, even if you knew it would, and painfully. It made the reveal, courtesy of a Dan Humphrey right hook, hurt that much more.

After this stunt, a spinoff entitled Everyone Hates Jenny Humphrey doesn't seem too far off, especially since she's been barred from Manhattan by Blair (awesome scene, BTW).

This happened after she tipped off Gossip Girl about Dan and Serena in bed together, too. That was some move. Perhaps it's good J takes her runny raccoon eyes and leaves.

If Blair doesn't take her down, someone else will at this point. It'll be interesting to see when - and why - the girl does return next fall and what sort of fireworks that sets off.

Speaking of other relationships Jenny ruined, Serena and Nate are done following the Gossip Girl blast, as (we think) are Dan and Vanessa! It was too much for N and V to take.

Pissed, Nate double-crossed Dan by forwarding the pic to Vanessa in Haiti. They made up later, which was great (they're guys, that's what they do), and they're both single now.

Dan and Serena aren't together, despite their obvious feelings for each other, and in all likelihood won't be. Serena's "working on herself" in Paris, after all ... that should be fun.

Even more ridiculous than the fact that she spent the episode dressed as an '80s prostitute is her ongoing list of reasons for breaking up with guys. How will she get it together?

Blair has an idea: Go to Paris. Since S is perennially unemployed and unenrolled in school, she decides to come along. What awaits them there - and back in New York after that?

Sparks in Disguise

Georgina Sparks: Perennial finale troublemaker ... and Dan's baby mama?!

Again, not a reunion with Dan. Something about the package Georgina brought him may make that tough. We knew something was up with G, but we did not see that coming.

Dan’s fathered her child? Why did she go to Blair and Chuck for help? Why did her hair change? Is it really Dan's? Nothing Georgina says carries any credibility, which is awesome.

The excuse for bringing everybody together last night was Dorota. Watching her become a mom was really sweet, even if all the characters showing up there was a big stretch.

It was far from perfect overall, but we give the show credit for rebooting itself if nothing else. This is Gossip Girl, right? Without shocking, OMG twists like these, why watch?

Okay, we wouldn't mind a happy ending too ... at some point.

We turn it over to you once again. What did you think of the Gossip Girl season finale? Did you love it? Hate it? Tell us why by voting and comment below!

Chuck has had an open pressure sore on the bototm of his left foot for a very long time.I decided to take him to a wound specialist for a fresh look and different approach to get it healed so we can do more aggresive P.T. and start taking him to a pool.As soon as the wound dr. gives the okay we are gonna start swimming:)I'm very excited about that.I think that swimming will trigger the left side of his body to respond to the brain's demands.Keep your fingers crossed. He is healing at his speed and I'm trying not to control the uncontrollable. He's my miracle!!

why dont just end the story with chuck with blai, nate with serena, and dan with vanessa?how many more season it going to be?always change girl/boy friend. sleep with this and that guy/girl.tired of watching two lover never get together!from season 1, until season 4, i hoped chuck back to blair, and serena with nate forever. but....no...problems comee up and those two couple are not together. if like this, better wait until the last season and watch, or just done with this season. i have enough with all this!

I hate Jenny Humphrey. I hope she dies in Hudson, where no one likes her there either. She stabs her best friend, brother, step-sister, and father in the back and deserves to be hated. As for sleeping with Chuck, IT WAS HER FAULT. He gave her a choice, and she chose to swipe her v-card. Chuck was beyond miserable thinking that Blair didn't love him anymore. Then he tries to PROPOSE to Blair. How sweet is that? Chuck is down on his knees doing the most romantic thing in the world and BAM. Little J can't stop ruining everyone else's lives. Personally, I think she should've been shot in Prauge, not Chuck.

intense finale- the kind of thing that makes you NEED to know what happens next, but there's no gossip girl if there's no Chuck- Chuck and Blair pretty much MAKE gossip girl, it would've been sweet if they got engaged towards the end but then again, when Chuck got shot, it WAS a cliffhanger, but if he dies, so does gossip girl. but Chuck and Jenny?!?? umm...NO! they're like...siblings too! what was Jenny thinking?!? as for serena...i think she's good with Nate. What happened to Olivia? she was good with Dan, and Vanessa was good with Scott(another character that got thrown away) gorgina=one word=fake.

Serena can't back together with Dan, they're stepbrother-sister, it's very disgusting when your sibling in love each other. Also chuck and jenny, they're not pretty match . I hope, serena with nate can make it, they're match couple. blair with chuck of course, they're very romantic so perfect. Dan maybe should be with georgina, in season 3, both look so interested for each other. Vanessa with scott, they're look flat but it's ok. How about, jenny with carter baizen? hahaha, that's so awful

Everyone knows that Chuck is Gossip Girl's hook. Without him, the show would lose most of their viewers. And of the people who would continue to watch, most of them would hate the show. So relax, everyone, of all people, Chuck will be the last to die/leave the show. No Chuck, No Gossip Girl. Second, we all know how much credibility anything that comes out of Georgina's mouth has. None. That's not Dan's baby, this isn't the whole story. Can I just take a moment here to say to Serenate: GOODBYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE. If Jenny Humphrey bring her little raccoon face back to the UES, she better come armed and shielded. The *itch is back and the claws are out.

I don't think Georgina is pregnant at all! Apparently that was a some big scheme! She saw Dan and Serena talking about how perfect the babies were in the hospital and got the idea! She just needs a reason for someone to give a crap that she's in some kind of trouble. No one else would even listen, she just needs help and knows Dan won't turn his back on her like everyone else!

I agree with a lot of the comments. But I do really feel sorry for Jenny. Sure she went into it herself, its not like she was forced, but she thought her and Chuck were in the same boat. To get ditched when Blair comes back to Chuck would be really sad for her. She realizes that she just lost her virginity, without a touch of 'specialness' to get ditched and still be upset, maybe even more then before. Then she finds what I assume is the engagement ring, I'm sure that makes her feel GREAT. Can you blame her for going and sitting in the hospital's chapel and having a cry to Eric and then Dan? And of course Dan is going to want to punch Chuck, I am sure every older brother would want to do that to the guy who just made his little sister get that upset (Did you see her!?). I have to say I'm disappointed that Chuck/Blair didn't get engaged. At least that would of been one happy moment of the finale for someone that is a main character in the series. I am so GLAD that Serena/Nate are over, and although I don’t care much for Dan, I am glad that he looks to be over with Vanessa. I was hoping he would get back together with Serena next season, I can at least stand him when he is with Serena (although I hate her too), it doesn’t look like it with Georgina’s pregnancy bombshell. Which TBH I doubt is Dan’s baby anyway. I’m hating the fact that Taylor Momsen won’t be on the show for half of season four but since the reason is that The Pretty Reckless are going on tour, I can forgive that. Her band is amazing. Gossip Girl won’t be anywhere near as good though. Here’s hoping for Chuck/Blair, Dan/Serena and Jenny/Nate next season!!!

does anyone not realize that dan and serena are stepbrother/stepsister? how disgusting. that was really scandalous. and it can't be dan's baby b/c georgina came back earlier with the whole poppy lifton scheme and that was definitely a good couple of season after she slept with dan, and she definitely was not pregnant then. so when she comes back like 2 months later she's suddenly pregnant? uh no. not dan's.

I´m still so shocked.
Well, first off I can´t believe that they ruined Chair, a whole summer without knowing they´ll be together will be awful.
Really hope the writers won´t make Chuck be dead, no Gossip Girl without chuck, he´s epic.
To Georgina and Dan: I´m not sure if it´s really Dan´s baby, it would fit for Gossip Girl to make everyone think that it´s Dan´s and it´s someone else´s baby the whole time. I think a baby on Gossip Girl would make the show a lot worse.
I never really cared about Serena and Nate, so whatever. Have to say that I didn´t care about Serena and Dan that much.
And what´s up with Nate sleeping with two hookers? are they trying to replace Chuck or what? Don´t think that would work.
Ed Westwick is by far the best actor on the show and Chuck (together with Blair) the best character.
I hope Season 4 will be, that chuck survives, travels to Paris to apologize to Blair, they won´t get married (that would be way too boring) and they´ll all get back to New York.
Not sure what I want to be happening for Serena, maybe a new, exciting character? no idea.
To Jenny: on one side I hate her, but on the other side I couldn´t imagine Gossip Girl without her. I think the writers are going to make her leave for the first few episodes of Season 4 and then she´ll probably be back like Serena was in the first episode ever. Maybe changed the way Serena was. Could be interesting.
To Georgina and dan: well, I really hate Georgina, Dan´s not my favorite character, but I would still HATE to see him being a father. Please not. I hope they´ll just make the baby be from another guy.
And another thing: I REALLY hope Vanessa won´t be there anymore. I really, really hate her. Sorry for the long comment :)
