Gossip Girl Producers Defend Season Finale, Reassure Fans

at . Comments

As we continue to sift through the wreckage of Monday's Gossip Girl season finale, so many questions linger: Is C going to be alright? Will J be back? Is G really pregnant?

That's just scratching the surface, too. Fortunately, executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage shed some light on all of the above with this E! interview ...

Q: What kind of response have you received after the finale?

Josh Schwartz: Certainly the Twitter account is blowing up. But the cool thing is that people are really reacting, which is great. Obviously, some people are terrified that Chuck Bass is dead. Some are furious about what happened with Chuck and Jenny.

Stephanie Savage: They're furious for different reasons. Some people are mad at Jenny; some people are mad at Chuck.

Josh Schwartz: Which is great. If you put a finale on, you want it to be the kind that people talk about for the summer.

Blair's Decision

Q: Why choose to go in such a drastic direction with the finale?

Stephanie Savage: We designed it to allow people's perceptions to shift. People who had been pretty comfortable all year thinking that Jenny Humphrey was a villain might find some sympathy for her in this episode. And people who've been comfortable thinking that Chuck was a lovable bastard may feel he crossed the line in this episode. We wanted to blur the edges.

Josh Schwartz: That's Gossip Girl for you. We were launched on the "OMFG" ad campaign; we gotta live up to that.

Stephanie Savage: We wanted the finale to drive us into next season. Sometimes it takes a little while to get our momentum up, and we wanted to do something heart-charging.

Q: Talk about the Chuck-Jenny hookup. Some fans are struggling with it.

Josh Schwartz: It's a move that's been in the DNA of the show since the first episode. That relationship is something that was in the pilot - it was Chuck being a predator. And here they meet in a place where they are almost equals, in terms of where they are emotionally. It was a way to track the evolution of the characters over three seasons.

Stephanie Savage: They're two characters who are really at their lowest point. And Jenny at her lowest is choosing to do the thing that she so resisted doing in the pilot, and Chuck at his lowest does the act that he's been so remorseful for since the pilot.

Q: Now that Chuck and Jenny have this out of their respective systems, you think they're both redeemable?

Josh Schwartz: Everybody is offered a second chance in life. If Chuck weren't to survive what happened in the finale, at least he went out in an act of nobility. Jenny's looking to get a second chance and to leave the city behind and start over. Hopefully both characters were offered an opportunity for redemption by the end of the episode.

Stephanie Savage: Redemption is a huge theme on the show, from the pilot. Is it possible for a person to change? What can be forgiven? Who can be redeemed? That's the thematic material of the show.

Q: Can Blair forgive Chuck after this misstep?

Josh Schwartz: First, there's the question of what happened to Chuck at the end of this episode.

Stephanie Savage: Let's see if Chuck can recover from his bullet wound first.

Josh Schwartz: Blair can forgive Chuck in her heart—if he's no longer with us.

Q: And is Chuck no longer with us?

Josh Schwartz: I'm just saying that would be a way to forgive Chuck, if he lost his life trying to protect the engagement ring he was going to offer to Blair. That's a pretty noble gesture that can erase a lot of wrongs.

Q: Don't forget, you recently promised us that Chuck and Blair are always at the forefront of your storytelling.

Josh Schwartz: That's not a lie.

Stephanie Savage: That's totally true.

A Sparks Sighting

Q: Now that Mercy has been cancelled, will we see more Michelle Trachtenberg - and is Georgina really preggers?

Josh Schwartz: Oh, she's pregnant. We love Michelle, and we're always looking for ways to bring her into the show each season.

Q: Vanessa was MIA in the finale. Will Jessica Szohr be back next season?

Stephanie Savage: She will be back at some point.

Q: What about Taylor Momsen? When is her leave of absence up?

Stephanie Savage: We have a plan, but we want to save it as a surprise.

Q: Will Blair make good on her promise to destroy Little J if she comes back to the city?

Josh Schwartz: Blair doesn't make promises [she can't keep].

Stephanie Savage: We will do whatever will create maximum drama.

That much is for sure. How are you feeling about the Gossip Girl finale? Any better after reading Josh and Stephanie's comments? Share your impressions with us below ...

dont worry guys. i lovee chuck and blair soo much too! they are defiently endgame and chuck defiently isnt dead

if chuck dies a whole lot of ppl are going to stop watching this show!
he has been my favorite character throughout the whole show and nothing better happen to him!!

chill people
we know that C and B are like rachael and ross in friends. if C and B are happy and lovey-dovey every moment, it's bound to get boring. i am glad that the writers are bringing drama to shake things up for C and B

Chuck isnt dead. Because without Ed Westwick the show could not and would not go on. I am so pissed that the writers ruined blair and chuck EVEN MORE!! They wreck them with the jack bass thing and now this. THIS?! They tease us with 5 minutes of b&c bliss and then they let all hell break loose. I am so fed up. Blair didnt even get to see the engagement ring. Or maybe she wouldnt of left him and he wouldnt of gone away and have been shot. I will continue watching GG because thats what a true fan does but i am really sick of all this cat and mouse, give and take, tease and ruin type of stuff the writers are doing with the characters and couples we all love.

Just to put those at ease, who are saying "I don't think chucks dead", "Chuck can't be dead!" or "Does anyone know if Chucks really dead!?" Well he is obviously not, because TVfanatic posted about the first episode of season four in which Chuck is in Paris as well as Serena and Blair.

I have to be honest I have just seen the finale, and i did not expect that at all. Kinda disgusted about chuck and jenny tbh. I knew it was gonna happen at some point there has been hints at it through season 2 and 3. Chuck cannmot not be dead. The show would have nowhere to go without him, unless Ed has chose to leave. Like when mischa barton chose to leave the O.C. and the fourth season was reasonably bad luckily they had adam brody. I hope that chuck and blair get back together at some point but i wqant blair the bitch back! And i think nates bad side should come out at some point him and serena bore me to death as does vanessa. Dan I like though hes funny and hotttt! hahaha. Jenny should come back I like her has the bitch fighting against blair too. I want the story back not constant OMG moments. It just stops being believable and starts becoming laughable. Ed westwick yumyumyum! hahaha.

How could they have made Jenny act as the victim and Chuck the bad guy? i mean she definately did consent to sleep with him! he even gave her a chance to leave but she chose to stay! if Jenny could sit in Chucks apartment with him alone after he tried to rape her then thats her problem, she should have stayed away! and i think Chuck just treated her like any other girl that he'd hook up with as a distraction from his pain. Even if Chuck hadnt tried to rape Jenny, them two hooking up is not as disgusting as Serena and Dan hooking up! Serena and Dan have a sibling in common- they share DNA!! theyre more related than Chuck and Jenny!! But i did hate watching them sit together knowing that they were about to kiss and then sleep together because i love CHAIR! If Chuck dies then i will stop watching and i know many other viewers will too! Chuck is such a central character- he carries the show! and Ed westwick is like the best actor in the cast (and a total hottie). Blair cannot really go on to be herself if he dies because he really is a big part of her! and i REALLY REALLY hope that Chuck and Blair get back together at some point in season 4!

LMAO, Josh is being such an ass. But i really admire his sense of humour and sarcasm. And come on people, of course Chuck Bass is alive. The writers and producers are stupid but not that much. Chuck and Blair are the most loved characters, I know all my friends would stop watching if he died, the writers know it.And honestly, if they killed Chuck how would they bring the OMG moments they love so much, they take a lot of risks with his character (I wish this would change. I want to see Blair being the bad guy for once in their relationship. Why only Chuck is sacrified to create drama?)

If Chuck dies, I will cry so hard. I am too in love with GG to totally stop watching it, but it most definitely will not be as good. I might actually start not watching it eventually... Chuck makes the show. He is funny and evil and interesting. He is multilayered, which makes him an interesting character!

Dear Stephanie Savage & Josh Schwartz,
I respect a lot of what you've done with the show this season, the plots of Dr. VDW, Chuck's real mom and Jack Bass, & Trip all came together really nicely. It conveyed everyones favorite characters Chuck Bass & Blair Waldorf in a light of change, they became much more grown up & I think all fans were pleased to watch them grow and become more respectable, with a few bits of drama such as Chuck selling Blair out to Jack... etc. I do respect you, but... not everything has to be an OMG moment. I would LOVE to have your job. But the thing is, all the shock factors make it to where NOTHING is shocking anymore and there is no foundation or importance to the show. Root it in relationships, and don't make everyone fuck eachother! Like Nate has been with EVERY girl on the show. I actually liked the Jenny & Chuck thing, and if he is alive, I think its a great move. But realize that nothing is OMG anymore when theres too many OMG moments, because nothing is shocking.

And who am I? That's one secret I'll never tell ... You know you love me. XOXO, Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl

[to Jenny] That's the thing. You need to be cool to be queen. Anne Boleyn thought only with her heart and she got her head chopped off. So her daughter Elizabeth made a vow never to marry a man. She married a country. Forget boys. Keep your eye on the prize, Jenny Humphrey. You can't make people love you, but you can make them fear you. For what it's worth, you're my Queen. I choose you.
