Shonda Rhimes Discusses Season 3 Finale

at . Comments

Season 3 of Grey's Anatomy began with Meredith helping an emotionally wrecked Izzie out of her prom dress and ended last night with Meredith helping a bawling Cristina out of her wedding gown.

Shonda Rhimes, as she puts it, likes symmetry.

Below are excerpts from her blog, in which she discusses the events of last night's finale, "Didn't We Almost Have it All," and what's in store for us in the fall when Grey's Anatomy returns for Season 4, now that she's "burned everything to the ground" in the third campaign ...

Shonda Rhimes Discusses Season 3 Finale

This season was very important to me. It wasn't as light as Season 2 and for good reason. Our characters were in a darker place. I needed to put Meredith's mother to rest, Izzie's grief to rest, and the race for Chief to rest. George needed to grow up on a monumental level and then come full circle to where he was when we first met him in the pilot.

Meredith had to finally try to face the fact that she's damaged when it comes to relationships. I wanted to put Bailey on a path of questioning her standing as The Chosen One. Both Burke and Derek needed to hit a relationship wall, each in their own ways. Then there's Cristina.

Oh, the Cristina of it all.

What Season 3 is about most of all - for all of our women - is the idea of "having it all" is a myth. And that was true for Cristina more than anyone. Slowly, over the course of the season, we've watched as hard-nosed Yang sliced off little pieces of herself to accommodate Burke.

From helping Burke hide his tremor to Colin Marlowe telling her she's not the woman he knew to prepping for the wedding, she slowly morphs from kickass surgeon-girl into a woman we don't quite recognize in that wedding dress with penciled eyebrows.

I wanted you to have the feeling in the finale that she's become this painted doll - beautiful, everyone's fantasy bride, but a painted doll all the same. No longer our Cristina Yang. There's that wonderful moment where she begs Bailey to let her cut because a part of her knows she's becoming someone she doesn't recognize.

And then, just as she's lost almost all of herself standing there in that gown ready to walk down the aisle, Burke is telling her that he can't marry her. Because even Burke realizes that this Cristina is not his Cristina. It's devastating.

I hope you noticed that in the beginning of the episode Cristina talks about a heart as a purely anatomical thing ("it pumps blood") and then Burke's vows are all about the heart as an emotional thing ("I promise to lay my heart in the palm of your hands") and it's so sad to realize that they have completely opposing views of the world.

I feel for Burke and you should too because he knows that, in a way, by leading, pushing, cajoling her down this path to being together, he's done this to her - he's changed her. That the only way to save her from disappearing completely is to set her free.

And then in that wonderfully painful moment (how much do we love Sandra Oh and her incredible talent?) in the apartment, Cristina turns to Meredith and says "He's gone. I'm free. Damn it."

And it's so nuanced and layered and so tragic because she's relieved and terrified and heartbroken and suffocated all at once. Watching her journey back from this is going to be amazing next season.

George and Izzie and Callie: you all have your opinions, very strong opinions, on how you feel about this love triangle. I'm glad â€" strong opinions mean you care what happens.

In the finale, Izzie's declaring herself and Callie's fighting for her rightful territory. That moment when Callie casually lets Izzie know that she's not only been named Izzie's boss but that she and George are trying to have a baby is very interesting.

Callie's saying "don't mess with me" in the only way she knows how. About the baby thing - for the record, I am very strongly against anyone trying to have a baby to save a relationship. It's crazy because it never works and I highly recommend you don't do it.

Plus it goes against every feminist bone in my body. But it is also human to delude yourself into believing that you're not having a baby to save your relationship, that instead having a baby is a way of taking your relationship to the next level.

And Callie gives that great speech about her hormones and her body.

I've been there and I know that it is real, this sudden baby rush that happens and, if you are firmly into your career, it freaks you out. Callie's just being as honest as she knows how to be with George.

Because she can't bring up Izzie again - not when the last time she brought it up, George called Izzie a supermodel thereby suggesting that Callie was, well…not.

I think i will be ok as long as der doesnt have anything to do with lexie and mer with any other man. They can sort out their problems eventually without any third party involved. Come on Shonda you can do better writting than that, so pls i am begging you dont hook der with lexie because it willcompletely estroy mer

Shonda, please save der/mer...and this crap about lexi grey...if you hook her up with derek, I'm done. Enough drama with these two...let them be the steady...they need each other. PLEASE!!!

Jut to let all I.W. fans know he is stayin with G.A. That should make all his fans seriously happy.

Well I wasnt too happy with the season finale but it just makes me more anxious to see the next season. I HATE LEXI GREY,and think it a horrible idea to cast her. I will continue to be a faithful GA fan....unless they try to make me watch all those new interns. That is where I will draw the line. I was aggravated with the Addison spin off because I didnt want to see new people for one episode ,let alone every week.

Please do not break up meredith and derek. They are the entire show to all of your fans. They are the reason we watch. The rest of the characters are interesting but breaking mer/der apart will hurt your fan base a lot.We do not want to see them all single again,we want mer/der together, theyre chemistry is what makes the show so killing what they have kills your show. The show had great humor till these last few episodes. And the audience will have no interest watching lexie grey try to take derek away, that will be the final straw.I do hope you read all the other blogs in and please listen to your fans.If we wanted overly dramatic painful tv,we would just watch daytime soap operas. We reach out for "Grey's" because it gives us "damaged" people hope.

Why is the African American Woman such a non entity? Why doesn't she have a life or friends or issues? What happened to her babies and the father of those babies? Why does she seem so emotional or fussy? GA is realistic I guess, eh?

The season finale was a nail biting episode from the very first second to the very last second of the show. I cannot believe all of the changes that are going to be made! I don' t know that I like what is going on, but at the same time it will be interesting to see what will happen. I hope that George does not leave the show, I absolutely love Addison, however I know she is going to leave. Private Practice I don't think will be a huge hit, I know that I will watch it, just because I love her on the show... But other then that I don't think that spin-offs usually make it as great as the original. Lexie..... WOW this show is just asking for drama!!!!! Poor Merideth, yes... her relationships don't work out... but that doesn't mean that the rest of her life shouldn't!!! Why is this poor girl encountering all of these horrible things? I mean Derrick hitting on her step-sister, who she doesn't even know!!! Wait until Derrick finds out... I wonder what is going to happen with that! It will be interesting. Izzie, and George really, really, really need to come to terms with the fact that they are in love with each other! Yes vows were said b/w George and Callie, however I think that love works in mysterious ways, and you can't help who you fall in love with. George was not in love with Callie when they got married. She just happened to be the first girl that saw interest in George when he was down because of Merideth!!!!

the season finale was amazing. sure, everything was "burned to the ground" but it makes way for a very interesting season 4. there seems to be loads of people unhappy with the depressing outcomes and claiming to never watch the show again, but since when was life so perfect? i'd rather watch a show that had characters that tried, lost and struggled like how you do in life than some picture perfect boring episode that nobody can relate to. i'm definately watching the next season, anything can happen. and lets admit it, we'll all want to know what happens next.

Grey's anatomy is getting Tiring. Another mer-der break-up after all that meredith has gone through? Izzie being unlucky in love again? Burke leaving Cristina suddenly in the altar after everything? It's seriously and i mean, SERIOUSLY, not fun to watch anymore. It's annoying and I'm not watching the 4th season. And like Meredith said in the finale, "it's over... so over". Grey's Anatomy is over... so over.

i seriously not going to watch the fourth season. the show just get to the point where it is not fun to watch anymore. i still love the 1st & 2nd season tho. ill just pretend that the show stops there cos this season suck and i bet the next will be too.
