Shonda Rhimes Shares Her Thoughts On "Drowning On Dry Land"

by at . Comments
Shonda Rhimes Discusses No question about it, Grey's Anatomy creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes - who wrote "Walk On Water," this week's "Drowning On Dry Land" and next week's "Some Kind of Miracle" - is taking some heat over recent developments.

How could she kill Meredith? Is she forcing a dramatic story line just for the sake of dramatic story line? And what happens next?

Rhimes' thoughts are articulated on her official blog, which you can read here.

But here's an excerpt from her take on "Drowning On Dry Land" and Meredith in particular. Even though she died, which was really sad, at the same time, it was kind of cool, wasn't it? Take it away, Shonda...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, yeah, that was Denny and Dylan.
I'm trying to be all casual about it.
Like I don't care.
Like, you know, Denny and Dylan, whatever. I'm cool, I'm good.
But I almost hugged Jeffrey Dean Morgan to death when he arrived on set. He was nice about it considering the restraining order he should have taken out against me during Season Two. I was glad to see him. And I was glad to see Kyle Chandler who was gracious enough to fly out here and film on one of his very few days off from the very well-written Friday Night Lights.
See, I miss Denny and Dylan. A lot. So it was nice to see them for a moment, wasn't it? Even if Meredith is dead?
You all have some pretty strong feelings about this. I've been reading your comments. Strong feelings. Which I respect. Grey's Anatomy is in its third season and we're doing something a little... different. It's about time we did.
Because, as I said when you shouted your horror about the Meredith-George sex, I remind you that we writers like to follow the characters here and we try very hard not to make story just to make story.
We like to have a point. Meredith being dead is about... well, you will see what it is about next week. She was in pain, this girl. And...
... okay, I don't want to talk about that. Meredith being dead at the end of this episode. I can't. Not yet.
Preston Burke who has of late been in the great eye of controversy will suffer a major blow. Could he be the one that dies at the end of next episode??
Avatar
Ok, so yeah, Burke and Cristina became the focus of several episodes. But do you seriously think it is a treat for Bang fans? The writers made them the focus in a very stressful way for the fans for chrissake!
Avatar
For many episodes we saw only few scenes between Derek and Meeedith because the focus were Tremor gate (Burke/Cristina) George/Callie and blah blah. Finally Derek and Meredith have the focus and I'M GLAD!
Avatar
I know she did not play a very big role but what about the chiefs niece could she be the one that dies? Just a thought that crossed my minds.
As for those of you who misses sex scenes with Mer/Der and Burke/Cristina give me a break is that all that you care about? I like it better when it is all "subtle suggestive guessing" that's when it's really hot.
What are we going to talk about if there is a 3 weeks breaK?????
I seriously don't think that the second death will involve Burke. Ellis Grey would be the most logical candidate for this. She's having a major heart surgery, which could cause her death. If it is Burke, it's going to be another story arc altogether. I mean, how can they kill of Burke in that very short span of time? He hasn't been ill and it can't be another gunshot, or something to that effect. About Burke never going to be number one for Cristina - I definitely disagree with that. Cristina's relationship to both Burke and Meredith are completely different. Meredith is Cristina's best friend. Burke is the love of her life. Both of them mean a lot to Cristina, but on different levels. And Burke knows that. He is such an intelligent person and I know he'll understand Cristina sooner or later. This little thing wouldn't get into them because Burke will understand.
Although I'm sure she will be saved by some miracle, I wouldn't be disappointed to see Meredith die. She's gotten quite annoying this season beginning with the whole "Finn and Derek can fight over me" deal. The other characters can carry on the show without her ever-present whining, and her "as surgeons we..." narration. I'd personally love to see Izzie step in as the lead female character. Meredith just isn't cutting it anymore.
Sorry, I hit the wrong key. this is my continuation.
I fell in Love with Derek all over again when he came out of the water carring his sweetie. The disstressed and tortured look on his made me cry. He looked like someone had just pulled his heart out of his chest. I can't bare to see him in agony. In the ambulancewhile working on Mer,during the time the paramedic said something to him . I could have sworn I heard him say " She is All I have". ( Did I mention I was crying?) He truly is her knight in shining whatever. He looked SOoo exhausted when they got to the hospital. When Dr Weber told him to leave now, he looked like a man thinking " My life is over if I loose her." I wasn't to impressed with the way Weber,addision and bailey were handling this medical situation. ( This is one of their own). It seemed to me they gave up to easily (or) early. I thought, Cristina needs to be there.
I'm glad when I saw the promo's, Cristina was not taking any prisoners and laying down the law as what they should be doing. I tell you That Cristina is awesome every week. I know she will get Mer back. Their friendship/sisterly bond is bigger than life. I Love it.!!! Again thanks Shonda, for giving me another SLEEPLESS WEEK. ( smile). Love Ya. Girl!!!!!
Burke Backer--I am having no problems with the forums now. But they are all so quiet except for the episode thread that I suspect people are still having problems.
WELL, I finally came in off the Ledge.I thought I was going crazy thursday nite. Am I Loosing my mind,is anyone else wondering where Mer is other Cristina and myself. I'm yelling at the tele. Thinking, I know Cristina feels something is wrong. It seemed to me Derek was moving in slow motion in trying to track Meredith. ( A Ploy I am sure the writers set up). I'm telling you guys you are going to give me a heart attack. I will admit I love the suspense.
I'm happy for Izzie being able to hold her own and help the man she was working on. But, She did throw me off with her ramblings in the hallway while everyone was waiting to hear about Mer. I still don't know what George's marriage has to do with this situation .
ok, seriously people..
there is only one problem here...and that is
BURKE AND CRISTINA haven't had sex for almost the entire season.. so what do you say let's drop the whole Meredith dead-alive thing..and get the BANG back in Action?
