Should Isaiah Washington Be Fired?

by at . Comments
Should Isaiah Washington Be Fired?Should Isaiah Washington be fired from Grey's Anatomy for the gay slur he made in reference to T.R. Knight last fall?

The remark - which has come back to dominate entertainment news again after Washington's denial of the incident at Monday's Golden Globe Awards and T.R. Knight confirming to Ellen DeGeneres today that it did occur - is fueling intense debate among Grey's Anatomy fans and various organizations.

Some think that the issue has been dead for some time and should just be dropped, while others believe Washington should be let go. Count Michael Ausiello - the TV Guide sleuth who can always be counted on to find the latest dirt and tell you how he feels about it - among the latter.

Here's what he says on his blog, the Ausiello Report, responding to a reader inquiry as to whether he witnessed the Golden Globe implosion:

"I certainly was there, and I have the internal scars to prove it. It was by far the ugliest, most uncomfortable press-room moment I have ever experienced. And judging by the shell-shocked faces on the cast â€" particularly T.R. Knight and Patrick Dempsey, who have been class acts throughout this entire ordeal â€" it was a new low for them, too.

What's ironic about the whole thing is that in Washington's attempt to clear his name, he came off as an out-of-control homophobe who throws the f-word around like it's candy. He's also playing fast and loose with the truth. Did he call T.R. a fa***t to his face? No. Did he refer to him as one behind his back? Yes. T.R. says so himself on today's Ellen DeGeneres Show.

His continued employment on a show that wears its diversity as a badge of honor is the height of hypocrisy. If ABC wants to be remotely true to the principles Shonda Rhimes so eloquently espouses through the show, it has to do the right thing and fire Washington. Anything else at this point is simply unacceptable."

That's just the opinion of one TV critic. But the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is also demanding an apology.

The group's president, Neil Giuliano, said that the remark "does more than create a hostile environment for his castmates and the crew of Grey's Anatomy... It also feeds a climate of hatred and intolerance that contributes to putting our community in harm's way."

GLAAD has contacted Washington in hopes of setting up a meeting with the actor to raise public awareness about the destructive impact of comments such as this. No word yet on whether he or anyone associated with Grey's Anatomy have been reached or accepted the offer.

I was waffling on the issue of him being fired until he came clean and admitted that he was lying all along. Now, without a doubt, Mr. Washington should be fired on the spot. Apologies or not - he said the negative remark in the first place. Denied it. Denied it again using the "F" word at the Globes and now he says he's sorry. OUT THE DOOR , NOW!

Mo-Lama, your post makes the most sense of anyone's here. I don't think it will be long now, IW will leave GA on his own due to on-set attitudes toward him. I wouldn't be surprised if the atmosphere of GA is not exactly 'family' now, and IW will leave. I give him until the middle of next year. Yes, summer of 2008. Let's see what happens.

Burke and Christina are my favorite characters and Isaiah and Sandra my favorite actors on the show. That said, I think the problem is no longer one about issues, but practical -- how can you put on a show that depends on an ensemble cast when every member of that cast now loathes Isaiah? Issues aside, someone who would rush to the front of the cast, grab the microphone from his boss and say what he said is not operating rationally. He is unstable, not in control of his impulses and very self-destructive. All he had to do was stay in the back row for five minutes, smile and let Shondra handle it, and he'd be a big star for years to come. Now this very fine actor will be poison in Hollywood. He didn't hurt T.R. or gays by what he did. He hurt his show, he hurt his network, he hurt his own career and by extension his wife and the many charitable causes he has used his celebrity to help. This guy must think he doesn't deserve success and is doing everything possible to sabotage himself. I hope he sees a good therapist soon and often, because he's talented and has wonderful ideals. But clearly he is very troubled inside, and so his co-workers won't ever feel comfortable working with him again. Good acting requires trust among the actors. That is gone.

well he should get fired..
thats what happens when you hired black people, they are good for nothing
they should be slaves just like god wanted them to be
and not out in public acting like monkeys.

I NEVER SAID or IMPLIED that this issue was about race. All I said was that some of you act as though IW couldn't be replaced by another fine African-American actor. There are many. Taye Diggs comes to mind. So does
Cuba Gooding's brother (is it Omar?) also, Omar Epps, even though he's working on 'House' now. You get the point. All I'm saying is, IF IW hadn't just apologized (again) then he should have been fired by Disney and another African-American actor could have replaced him. That's all. I agree that Katy Heigl should have kept her anger and her opinion to herself. Actually, the only person who had the right to say anything about the statement IW made at the Globes (and the impact of it) was TR Knight, as this DIRECTLY affected him. Katy Heigl just made things worse. TR can fight his own fights.

not everybody says something like that in moment of rage. But we are not the same and I am really sure that a word doesn't make you a bigot. This is a huge hypocrysis. And TR is at fault too. I agree with those that said that his performane on Ellen was the best of his career.

IW shouldn't be fire. He is a great actor and everybody can make a mistake, even people that judge so harsly. If he is off, ga is done for me.

Ok there are some pretty good responses that you have put down here the last few days about this issue. There really is only one problem though. How do you really know if he even called him a faggot. The New York Post published it. Did it say it was a quote. The New York Times are so left wing, you have no idea if they lied or took the statement completely out of context. Unless you have some kind of concrete proof, you have no right to criticize either of the cast mates for anything at all. This is completely redicules that GLAAD is demanding an apology for something with no actual proof. There isn't anything to get fired over either, so that is out of the question. If I was him and they fired me for something like that, there would be a lawsuit in the making. I think both of them are exceptional actors and deserve to be on the show, because the whole cast makes the show what it is. THE BEST DRAMA SHOW(on the small screen).

YES!! I work night's however I record the show. What Isaiah Washington said was intollerabe! I am writing this because I don't want to watch the show! I look forward to the day when he is off the show! In Michigan the religious black community give the local gay community a hard time. I do not enjoy this and certainly will not except it!

Fire the Bigot Trash. If he was called a nigger we would all be in an uproar. No surprise he has been seen hanging with the Bush Family. Martin Luther King would be ashamed of him. He is a sick jerk. I hope people with Boycott this show and the sponsors that pay him to spread hate and intolerance. Fire him now!

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

There's a reason I said I'd be happy alone. It wasn't 'cause I thought I'd be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It's easier to be alone, because what if you learn that you need love and you don't have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It's like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.
